"Do you mind?"
Buffy looked up from her book at the pissy tone in her sister's voice. Dawn sat at the table surrounded by books. Dean Winchester stood above her, leaning over her shoulder to read the text. His face was only inches away from Dawn's.
"Y'know other people need to read the book too."
"I thought we discussed this Dean; I do the reading and you shoot things." Dawn said with exaggerated patience her tone suggesting she was talking to a pre-schooler.
Buffy hid her grin behind her own book. The argument between Dean and Dawn had been bubbling for almost three weeks, ever since Dean had decided to use the watcher council's resources and join forces with the Scoobies. Trouble was Sam had decided to return to college after they had killed the demon who had killed their mother. Without Sam, Dean and Dawn had been sniping at each other without check.
It seemed impossible for them to be in the same room as each other. The moment Dean had realized Dawn wasn't going to be won over by flirting he had done everything to get under Dawn's skin.
"Look Dean we all know Sam's the brains of the family, no need to overcompensate."
Dean's jaw tightened angrily, and he drew away, his expression closing down and he walked away. Buffy knew instantly that Dawn had crossed the line. Dawn apparantly reached the same conclusion. She stood and followed, stepping in front of him. gently wrapping her fingers in Dean's sweater to keep him still the other gently cupping his cheek.
"Dean I am so sorry, I didn't mean it. I have a foot and mouth problem. Ask Buffy."
"No! I suck. You took care of me on the road..."
"You took care of yourself."
"Before you I didn't have any experience of the world."
"And I showed you a world of demons and ghosts."
"Yeah well not exactly a new concept for me. Besides the scenery was better."
Buffy lowered her eyes, feeling self conscious for eavesdropping on an obviously private moment. The only reason she let Dean anywhere near her sister was because Dean had demonstrated a powerful protective streak for Dawn.
"Don't be mad at me, okay?"
Buffy cursed as the overloaded table sent several books flying to the floor. Instantly Dawn let go of Dean, her pale cheeks flushing.
"So we cool?"
Dean coughed his voice back to life. "Yeah, we're cool Summers. Don't sweat it." He flashed her a smile and sauntered away. Dawn stood in the doorway, gathering up her emotions before turning to her sister.
"So. Ancient symbols carved into people in their sleep."
"Right." Buffy watched as her sister once again became engrossed in her books and wondered about what she had just seen and what it could mean.
