Hagrid strolled through the Hyperion doors clutching five Hogwarts letters in his huge hand and boomed happily, “Would there be four lads and a wee lassie about waitin’ for their letters?”
Cordelia grinned up at him. She had a soft spot for the loveable oaf that didn’t have anything at all to do with his habit of declaring her ‘the loveliest lady he ever had seen’, no matter what Xander said. She yelled, “Connor, Blaise, Neville, Harry, and Millie! Someone’s here to see you!”
She grinned when Hagrid pulled her off her feet when she reached up to hug him. Connor took his usual flying leap over the banister while the other kids trampled down the stairs. They all stopped short of Hagrid and waited somewhat patiently. It’d taken her nearly 10 years but Cordelia had finally managed to impress some manners into them.
Hagrid handed each kid their letter then stood and bounced excitedly, rattling the hotel a bit. “Ne’er gotten ter see a wee one open their letter before.”
Cordelia smirked as they each tore into them then, whooping, swarmed the large man. He bellowed with happy laughter as he swept all five of them up and bounced them around the lobby. Cordelia blew the dust from the rafters he’d shaken loose out of her face and just smiled at how happy her babies were. When Hagrid had finally put them down, they swarmed her. She made sure to give each a hug and to collect the letters so that they wouldn’t get lost (Neville), forgotten (Harry), or destroyed (Connor). They would be spending the next day at Diagon Alley and she’d need the lists to make sure they got every thing (including, unfortunately, the stupid pointy hats that were part of the uniform).
“Go tell your fathers,” Cordelia demanded and the kids were off, the boys to find Angel and Millie to Xander’s workshop.
“When’ll ye be goin’ ter Diagon Alley?” Hagrid rumbled happily.
“Tomorrow,” Cordelia sighed. “We’ll be taking those five plus Marcus and Dawn to get their things.”
Hagrid nodded then tapped the side of his nose. “Keep an eye out. Ye ne’er know who ye’ll see.”
She beamed up at him. “We’ll be coming in through the Leaky Cauldron. If someone would be wanting to know.”
Hagrid winked before he started to back for the door. “Maybe someone would. Be seein’ ye, Miss Chase.”
“Bye, Hagrid,” she said happily. She had to wonder if there wasn’t just a little magic about how Hagrid seemed to make people happy.
She shrugged the thought away as she watched Xander come down the stairs talking to Marcus, one arm around Millie and the other holding Sasha. Marcus, glowering, had a sleeping Nico curled against his shoulder. Cordelia knew that Marcus wasn’t happy about the kids going to Hogwarts, both because they’d drive him crazy and because he wasn’t particularly fond of the place. She sighed and fought the urge to cry. Who’d have thought that Cordelia Chase would be getting so upset at the thought of the majority of her babies being sent away to a boarding school?
Xander looked up from trying to talk Marcus into smiling and grinned happily at her. His kids, except Marcus, were happy, so he was happy, too. Of course, she had to wonder if he’d forgotten the conversation they were going to have to have with the kids before they went near Diagon Alley.
His eyes landed on a happily chattering Harry and no, she could see he hadn’t forgotten anything. He’d just compartmentalized it.
Soon enough, everyone was in the media room, except for Lorne who was watching the under 10 crowd.
“Alright!” Joyce called. Everybody quieted. “First, congratulations to Harry, Neville, Blaise, Millie, and Connor on getting into Hogwarts.” After a brief applause and several whistles, she said, “Now, though, we’ve got some things that we need to tell you before you go.”
She nodded to Sirius who stood fidgeting. “You all know that Hogwarts is my alma mater. What Remus and I never told you was that, while we, along with your father, Harry, and the rat, were there, so was Snape.” He didn’t quite wring his hands but it was a near thing. “You need to understand. I was the first Black to be sorted outside of Slytherin in nearly a thousand years. At the time, I despised everything the House stood for because my family had used its ideals as a justification for cruelty. I’ve come to understand through my associations here at the Hyperion that just because you’re sorted into one House as opposed to another as a child does not
mean you’re going to be evil. But, in my youth, I will admit to being a bit of a bully, a hothead. And my favorite target was Severus Snape. As such, he’s going to dislike all of you, but especially you, Harry. And for that, I am sorry.”
Harry nodded slowly and Sirius sank back into his seat looking very unhappy.
Cordelia shifted so that she could sit in front of Harry and the other kids. “You know how you came to live here. We always thought that it was only fair to your parents if you knew about them. And part of knowing about them was to know about how they died.” All of the kids nodded. “Unfortunately,” she sighed, frowning, “most of the Wizarding World has decided that Harry here is a hero for getting rid of their Dark Lord drama when they couldn’t. So, we’re warning you before you go, that Harry’s going to be famous. He’s going to get a lot of attention for something he didn’t have any control over. I want all of you to remember what we taught you and that we love all of you equally. It’s going to be hard for him because everybody’s going to expect him to be perfect and, if they find out you’re his family, they might expect you to be perfect, too. When you’re not
perfect, everybody’s going to rub it in your face instead of remembering that you’re just First Years. You can’t know everything and you aren’t perfect to anybody but me.”
All the kids giggled.
Angel stepped up behind Cordy and said seriously, “You know how
you came to be here but we thought we’d wait to until you got older to tell you why
. There’s a prophecy that says, somewhere down the road, that Harry’s going to defeat Voldemort for good. We’ll let you read it later but that’s the gist of it. At the end of the day, remember: Voldemort and the things he touts are the reason that each of you, except Connor, lost a parent that loved you. We just thought that it was important for you all to know before we sent you somewhere we can’t watch over you like we do here.”
Everyone was quiet, quiet enough to hear the jingle of change as a leg was jiggled. Everyone’s heads swiveled to look at Xander.
He grinned suddenly. “Now that all the bad news is out of the way, who wants cake?”
And all of the kids ran for the dining room, squealing and laughing, finding Lorne there with the other kids waiting to celebrate, too. After all, it was Harry and Neville’s birthdays and they had gotten into Hogwarts. Doom and gloom could wait for another day.
