Chapter 7

Disclaimer-I still don't own these guys

A/N-Sorry its been so long since i updated, my RL has been crazy hectic lately.

Now on with the story!

Xander got up early the next morning; he figured that if he was going to make his plan work he needed to be seen in more than baggy shorts and Hawaiian shirts. Since he was up so early he was up and ready before Jack and Zoe were even awake. When they got down for breakfast, Xander was already in deep conversation (argument) with SARAH about why anyone would want to live in the Bahamas. Jack and Zoe shared a look before joining Xander at the island.

“So what are your plans for today?” Jack asked, “Sorry I couldn’t get today off to hang with you, baring the whole short notice thing, I already promised Jo…..”

Xander shrugged, “Its cool, I figured that I would hang out at Café Diem for awhile before I decide to follow you around the rest of the day.”

“And why do you want to hang out at the Café?” Jack asked suspicious.

“Oh no reason,” Xander grinned and tried to look innocent, he must have failed spectacularly because he then watched Jack hesitate in grabbing the milk for his cereal before getting up and going over to the refrigerator and asking SARAH to “Beer me.” The house gave a token argument before giving in after being threatened with being banned from watching Jerry Springer. Jack then proceeded to pour said Beer into his corn flakes, and then downed the rest of it before putting the empty glass back on the counter.

“Whoa! Breakfast of champions, huh, Jack?” Xander laughed.

Jack glared at him before responding, “I have to have something to get me through the day if you’re going to be hanging around messing in things you shouldn’t.”

“I would never!” Xander gasped as if the very thought was preposterous.

Zoe gave him a look as she took her dishes to the sink, “Come on Xander, I just met you last night and even I already know you are full of shit.”

“You have a smart daughter Jack.” Xander told him/

“Don’t I know it!” Jack said, still eating his Beer Flakes.

Zoe shook her head at their antics, before grabbing her smart car keys and turning to Xander, “I can give you a ride to the Café if you want.”

Xander just shrugged and after saying “see ya later” to Jack, in which he barely got a grunt, he followed Zoe out.

Xander sat at the counter farthest to the right, watching the people around the Café. Since it was the morning rush Zoe hadn’t really had time to talk to him. That was fine with him though, he was having fun just watching the crowd. Since it was Saturday, the scientists weren’t quite in such a hurry but some still rushed out as soon as they had finished their breakfast, muttering formulas to themselves. Soon enough most of the customers were gone and it was down to the crowd that he had met last night at GD. He figured this was going to be the case when he saw Allison glancing over every so often from where she sat with Stark. The rest stayed because they too wanted answers. Xander wondered if Jack knew how protective his new friends were. As soon as the counter was clear of people and dishes he found himself surrounded. Jo and Zane sat together nearest him with Henry just beyond that and so forth until Fargo, Allison, and Stark were all sitting at the counter staring at him. On his way out the door Taggart gave him a cheery wave and winked.

“Alright, what do you want to know?” Xander sighed as he put his coffee cup down, though inwardly he was rubbing his hands in glee.

“Who are you?” Allison asked first.

“I’m Xander Harris.” Xander replied knowing that his answer would just inflame her further.

“Fine, why are you here then?” Allison asked through gritted teeth.

“I’m an old friend of Jacks, I found out that this was where he worked now and thought I would come say hey.” Xander said.

“How did you know about this place and that Carter worked here, that’s classified knowledge.” Stark asked barely discernible amusement in his voice.

“I told you, I work for the IWC and they needed someone to come out here anyways.” Xander explained.

“What’s the IWC?” Zoe asked her and Vince having come up a few seconds before.

“The International Watchers Council, a highly top secret organization, even higher on the food chain than Eureka. They have their hands in so many things that no body really knows what they’re real purpose is.” Henry explained with an expectant look at Xander.

“Well at least I know our super-secret-society security is working.” Xander said with a grin at Zoe, “Sorry though, the IWC has to many important things going on for me to just tell random people I’ve just met about them in an open Café.” He said to the others.

“So how did you meet Jack?” Henry asked.

“We met in a dark ally.” Xander said with a lecherous grin and a raised eyebrow.

“Who knew the good Sheriff had it in him.” Zane said grinning as nearly everybody laughed.

Xander chuckled, “That came later, no we did meet in a dark alley but it was because I was being mugged so to speak and Jack stepped in and saved the day. He was so dreamy.” Xander gave an exaggerated sigh.

“What happened after that?” Zoe asked, ignoring his joke which had moved on to him fanning himself and fluttering his eyelashes.

“What do you mean?” Xander asked dropping the joke.

“Well obviously that wasn’t all there was to it, how did you start working together?” Zoe replied.

“Seriously you are way too perceptive for your own good.” Xander grinned, “But you’re right, after the attempted mugging we went for a drink, a sort of ‘hey you saved my life how bout I by you booze’ kinda thing. We hit it off right away, he told my about the problems he was having in his marriage and I told him how the IWC wanted me to have a partner but the only ones who wanted to do it thought I was a complete idiot. We came up with the plan that Jack would be my partner. I used my sway at IWC to have the Marshalls contract Jack out to us. His only stipulation was that we base our operations out of LA, so that he could be close to you, Zoe.” Xander explained.

Before anyone could ask a question Zane asked, “Your sway? Just how far up on the food chain are you?”

“Pretty far,” Xander hedged, hoping they would leave it alone.

“How far is ‘pretty far’?” Jo asked.

Xander sighed, he knew he could lie if he needed to but these people were Jack’s friends and Jack’s potential "Friends" so he really didn’t want them to hate him, which they would, he knew, if he lied to them.

So resigned to his fate he responded, “I’m second in command, technically I only answer to one person.”

Silence reigned for a few seconds, his audience was completely stunned. He tried to read their reactions but could only get Fargo, whose expression was almost worship at this point, and Zane, who was excited. The rest was just guess work, from what he knew of the man, Henry was impressed, he thought, but a bit concerned what a person with his power could do. Henry hadn’t been to concerned with his presence to begin with, he didn’t have secret feelings for Jack so he wasn’t jealous and he didn’t run GD so he didn’t have to be as weary as Allison was so that let Henry just sit back and observe him.

With Allison he thought he had done a lot to sway her to his side, Xander knew he wasn’t out of the woods just yet but he had made some progress. Xander reminded himself to speak to her privately at some point.

He understood Jo’s reaction the most, she thought his position was impressive sure, but nothing she hadn’t seen before, she couldn’t care less about it. The only reason she wasn’t finding places to get rid of the body, and he was sure she knew a few, was because of the way he treated Jack and Zoe. He understood that, before the Scoobies had taken over the Watchers Council they had no use for positions and what/not. Now however whenever someone looked at them all they saw was their place on the Council. Even though they were all powerful, so to speak, they still made sure to see people that they met as a person not a position.

It was Nathan Stark’s reaction that he was most interested in, even though the man had a brilliant poker face. He knew the man didn’t like him, liked his relationship with Jack even less. Part of him wanted to play with that, to torment Stark about his feeling for Jack (which were obvious to everybody but Jack apparently) and for Xander’s closeness with Jack, and for kicks Xander’s history with Jack, which had yet to be revealed to the public. Then Xander’s more adult mind kicked in and realized that nothing good could be gained by tormenting him.

Xander realized that he needed to get close to Nathan Stark as well, if he was going get him and Jack together.

Xander grinned as he watched them; all their expectations of him were blown out of the water. He decided to keep the mystery going a bit longer, let them chew on what they had to for awhile. He gave Zoe a high five and walked out of the café, intending to find Jack and seeing if he could annoy him like he used
