Chapter Eleven - Can't We Bond?

Dean raced out of the building, giddy as a kid on Christmas day. He had a nasty cut on his forehead that was bleeding profusely. The collar of his shirt, as well as his neck was covered in dried blood.

“That was friggin’ awesome!” Dean cried gleefully, “You were in the air…and then…you were behind them and then…that head butt…and the way you…”

Buffy shrugged modestly, “You were pretty good too.”

Dean bounced while walking, “Good? I was damn near perfect! Did you see how that bastard thought he had me and then I surprised the shit out of him?”

Buffy let her smile fade, “Uh, not really. I was kind of busy.”

Dean frowned with disappointment, “Well then you missed a fantastic show.”

Buffy looked at Sam, visibly shaken. He had blood on his shirt and several scratches on his face.

“You okay Sam?”

Sam clutched his side and grimaced, “Yeah, just a little sore.”

“Hey, you owe me a thank you,” Dean remarked, “You would have been a meal if it weren’t for me.”

“If every part of my body didn’t ache right now including my fingers, I’d be flashing you a thank you,” Sam grumbled.

“Hey, I told you how you needed the practice. If you weren’t holed up with those books all the time you’d a given one of those demons at least a decent fight…woo hoo I feel good…what else can we kill?”

Buffy rolled her eyes, “Oh god, you remind me of Owen.”

Dean paused on the curb, “Who?”

“Oh, he was just some guy at my school who I liked and who I thought liked me for me but it turned out he just wanted to hang out with me because I’m danger girl and he was an adrenaline junkie. Alas, it’s just another dating disaster in my attempt to have a normal life.”

Dean frowned, “A normal life can be overrated you know. Besides, you can’t be the Slayer and have a social life.”

Buffy shot him a look, “Now you sound like Giles. And yes I can. I’m sixteen. I should be worrying about whether what I’m wearing is on its way out, or whether someone’s gonna ask me to prom or what color lipstick makes me look good. Instead, I have to worry about how to protect my friends, my mom and a whole town from the things they shouldn’t know about. Sometimes it’s just too much. Sometimes I just want to feel like a normal girl, even if it is pretend or for a fleeting moment. Didn’t you ever want that? To feel normal?”

“We are normal.”

“You know what I mean. You and Sam and your dad have been hunting your whole life, haven’t you ever thought or craved doing something else? Something people your own age are doing?”

“What, like college? Hell no. I hated school.”

“I’m just saying you had a choice to fight demons, I didn’t. I thought when you guys got here, we’d I don’t know – vent.”

“What were you expecting us to do? Sit around, eating ice cream, crying about how we wished we could go to a school dance?”

Buffy shrugged, “That doesn’t sound so bad, does it?”

Dean’s eyes widened, “No, it sounds – horrible. I’d rather burn my eyes out. You’re not getting a pity party from me. Hell, in a way, I kind of envy you. You’re in the devil’s backyard and you get to kill his children and say, “Screw you bastard” – that’s way more exciting than some lame pep rally.”

“You’re like seriously screwed up, you know that?”

========================================

When they returned to the house, Buffy padded into the kitchen and opened the fridge. Her stomach growled as she scooped out leftovers onto her plate. She plopped down into the living room where the guys had collapsed from exhaustion. Dean felt his jaw drop at the sight of the tower of food on her plate.

“Damn, are you going to eat all that?”

Buffy shrugged casually, “I get hungry after a hunt.”

“Where does it all go? You’re not bulimic are you?”

“No, I have a fast metabolism.”

“Well, I guess that’s a good thing. Where’s my plate by the way?”

Buffy stabbed her fork into the mountain of food, “Get your own.”
