A Little Slayer Princess
Chapter One: Called
Thirteen year old Sara Crewe clung desperately to the rickety plank, precariously perched between two ledges, rain pouring down around her from a menacing dark sky. Behind her was Miss Minchin’s school for girls, and most specifically the mean, shew-like Miss Minchin herself, along with the police she had so spitefully called, to take Sara away forever. Ahead of her, the neighbor’s house, where the friendly Indian Gentleman stayed with his pet monkey. They reminded her of home, of India, but more importantly the house was the only route to her escape. There was no plan, no thoughts, nothing but her desperate need to get away from the dark reality that had held her captive for so long since her father died.
Sara inched forward on her hands and knees, but the rain made everything slippery, and three stories up, she was scared to death of falling. Somehow she kept moving, if only little by little, clinging to the hope that the unknown ahead could not be worse than the abuse she had suffered behind her. But with every inching move she made, the board, her only lifeline, rocked and clacked against the ledges. Frantically Sarah lunged forward, needing to feel solid stone beneath her, not wanting to spend any more time in insecurity. With her sudden movement, the board slipped, she felt it fall, she felt herself falling, and she was overwhelmed with the knowledge that she had failed and this was the end.
In that instant, time seemed to move so slowly, almost as if she was not falling but suspended. She heard a voice whispering…
“Are you ready to be strong?”
Sara’s fingers landed on the ledge.
