Chapter 1: Bad Moon Rising
Tony DiNozzo sat at his desk his head in his hands, despair was written in large bold letters on his face. Gibbs, Ziva, Abby, and Ducky were due back today, and he wanted to be anywhere but here.
McGee was the lucky one HE was in the hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder! He Would have to go and get shot by a stalker-fan on the very last day of his book tour!
Gibbs was NOT going to like the changes that were in the works, none of the others were either, but Gibbs was going to really hate them, oh say, big time!
First and foremost: Ziva was being sent packing! The political climate was changing, and Israel was no longer being looked on as the ally it once was. Then Mossad Asst. Director David had been assassinated by group of Hamas agents, that did not survive to come to trial, at his home in Tel Aviv.
Secondly: Director Leon Vance was being ‘booted’ upstairs to put it in the Director’s own words to a position much closer to the Secretary of the Navy. His replcement is to be a former senator from a Northern state that had once served as a Naval officer. Gibbs had often made disparaging remarks about this senator’s Naval career whenever someone brought it up.
Thirdly: Abby was being ‘asked’ to take over the forensics lab at the Smithsonian Institute, thus leaving law enforcement. This offer, loosely translated, was an offer that she could not refuse. The incoming Director had made it clear that if she did he would find a way to fire her and blackball her in the forensics community. She had found the evidence that had put his buddy and former chief-of-staff in prison with her expert testimony.
Fourthly: ‘Ducky was to be forcably retired. No ifs, and, or buts he was being replaced by a former politically active coroner from the new Director’s home state.
Fifth McGee was to be relieved of duty because his last book was too close to a case that the Navy found to be too sensative to publiclly speak about.
Lastly: he was being assigned his own team…in San Diego California. The team was delibrately made up of misfits, losers, and ne’r-do-wells. It was a move guaranteed to end his career. He had already written his letter of resignation, and meant to give it to the Boss on his return.
Oh, yes indeedy life was going to be hell at exactly 8 a.m.
Gibbs walked through the door right on time, as usual, and was immediately called to Director Vance’s office. Five minutes later the following was heard by anyone in or the near vicinity of the facility. “Your kidding me!” “That putz!,” “Crap too!”, and “I Quit!”.
Gibbs stalked down the stairs in a rage, a black scowl on his face, then he headed down to Abby’s lab.
Tony’s phone rang. He picked it up and said, “NCIS Special Agent DiNozzo, may I help you?”
He heard an all too familiar voice on the other end, “DiNozzo get your ass down here NOW!” Then the line went dead.
Tony jumped up, grabbed the letter he had for Gibbs, and moved at a dead run for Abby’s lab.
When he got there he was not terribly surprised to see the rest of the team, minus the injured McGee waiting for him.
He handed Gibbs the letter.
“What the hell is this, DiNozzo,” Jethro asked angrily.
“It’s my letter of resignation, Boss. I’m not waiting until my new team can bury my career. I’m gonna perform a mercy killing on it now!” Tony said.
“Good! Listen, have you got any honest to God reason that you can’t go away for a long time, maybe forever,” Gibbs asked him with a smile on his face?
“Huh,” DiNozzo was non-plussed by Jethro’s reaction.
“Look they want us gone, right…” asked Abby?
“Yeah,” Tony drew the word out until it was much longer than it should be.
“Well we’ve got a place where we can go. Someplace where they want and need us, an organization that does really good things!” Abby grinned at him. “We can even pick up McGee and take him too, if he wants to come!”
“Abs are you serious,” Tony looked directly into her eyes?
“Yup, ask Gibbs if you don’t believe me,” she said still smiling.
“She’s right my boy,” said ’Ducky’, “We are very much wanted there, and were are also very much needed.”
“Where is this place,” Tony was still a little wary.
“We have to show you,” Ziva said, “Because if we just tell you, you won’t believe us.”
Once again Tony just said, “Huh?”
“Meet us at Bethesda tonight in McGee’s room at 9:00. OK?” said Gibbs.
“Ok Boss, cause it’s you, but I’m still kinda ‘huh’ here.” Tony shook his head.
“Tonight then, at nine in McGee’s room,” said Gibbs smiling a bit of a devious smile.
NINE P.M. BETHESDA NAVAL HOSPITAL, WASHINGTON D.C, ROOM 336C
“McGee these people own their own publishing company,” Abby said exasperatedly! “And besides if the new Director get his way the only thing you’ll be writing for is the prison newspaper!”
Connor entered the room with Ziva hand in hand. Ziva gazed at the strange young man lovingly. They were greeted by Tony.
“Tony I want you to meet my soon to be husband, Connor Angel. Connor this is Special agent Anthony DiNozzo of NCIS.”
“That is now former special agent Ziva,” Tony said ruefully, “I gave Director Vance my letter of resignation after Gibbs read it. It's effective immediately.”
“Well if everyone is finally here I think we can get started,” Jethro gave Abby a pointed look.
Abby removed a small vial of what looked like blood from her purse. With great care she uncorked the vial. Ziva took a small glass pipette from Abby’s purse and with equal care captured a single drop of the precious liquid.
“Everybody get around me in a circle, and hold hands. McGee since you have only one working hand you put that one on my right shoulder,” the little forensic scientist instructed. “Is everybody ready? Good, Ziva drop the pipette inside the circle.”
Tony and McGee gave their friends a quizzical look but kept silent. Gibbs obviously had SOMETHING planned, but Lord knew what.
Ziva dropped the fragile pipette to the floor as Abby began to chant in a Cajun patois. The rhythm of the chant set McGee’s teeth on edge, and made Tony’s hair stand on end. The impact with the floor broke the fragile glass, releasing the blood drop.
For a second Tony thought nothing had happened. Then a green metallic looking mist began to rise like a serpent from the floor. *Gas,* Tony thought for a second, but the way the mist move it was almost like it was sentient!
The mist formed a upright ring inside the circle. Through the ring Tony could see what looked like an empty parking bay under some office building.
“’Duck’ why don’t you go first, Abby and I will bring up the rear, Tony follow ‘Ducky’.” Gibbs said in his best no nonsense voice.
Dr. Mallard cheerfully stepped through the strange portal. In the distance Tony could now see some indistinct figures. One of these figures, a young woman, who looked to be mulatto, moved quickly to the doctor’s side …too quickly for the eye to follow. Giving him a kiss on the cheek, they moved off to the side, arm in arm.
“Move Tony we don’t have all that long before the portal closes. Don’t worry its safe, and I promise you can come back if you really want too.” Gibbs gave him a uncharacteristic wry smile.
Tony walked into the portal followed by McGee. Soon the hospital room was empty. Just as the portal closed the night nurse Ensign Geraldine Vernaky entered the room completely surprised to find it empty.
