The Not so Scooby Doo Ending....
I hate disclaimers, but they are necessary.
Scooby Doo and the characters involved were created by Joe Ruby, Ken Spears, Iwao Takamato and Fred Silverman. It's a Hannah Barbera product but at this point Warner Brothers owns the franchise.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer and it's characters were created by Joss Whedon and friends. It's a Fox show.
This is a work of fanfiction and not an attempt to make money.
It had been sixth months since Xander had disappeared.
Sixth months without a sign of him.
No one was even claiming to have killed him.
He was just....gone.
Slayer House... Cleveland.
“Why are we meeting up here in the attic?” Faith asked Willow as the four women entered the dusty room.
“It's the only place where no one else wants to be. We can't even get the junior slayers to clean this place out.” Willow told her as she turned on the lights.
“Hey, is that a boom box?” Dawn said as she walked over to one of the many piles of junk that were within the large attic. “It's got a tiny TV in it! This must have been top of the line like twenty years ago. I doubt it could pick anything up since transmitted signals have gone digital.” Dawn said with a frown.
“I wanted one of those so bad when I was a kid.” Faith said with a nostalgic grin on her face before looking at the resident witch. “So what's the story Red?”
“Xander isn't dead. I... I have to believe that. He's just not in this dimension. I want to find him.” Willow told the others.
“And do what?” Buffy asked from where she was standing. She'd found the nearest window and was almost enjoying the view from the top floor of the building. It... put the neighborhood in perspective.
“I want to see where he is first. See how he is. If it's a bad place, we might be able to bring him back.” Willow said before softly adding. “I learned my lesson last time.”
Buffy nodded. “And you need us for this?”
“We all know Xander. Having more people here thinking about him would help.” Willow explained. “Please. After this I'll stop looking for him.”
“Promise?” Buffy asked her.
“I promise. I know I've been out of sorts since we found out he was... gone.” Willow said wiping her eyes.
“We all miss him Red, let's get this show on the road before people notice we're all missing and start with the rumors.” Faith sighed. "Damn baby slayers have nothing better to do than gossip about us."
"I guess it means you aren't giving them enough to do." Dawn shrugged.
"That or we shouldn't let Andrew be the mother hen." Buffy said. "Even if he is really good at it."
Faith and Willow nodded. Andrew really was one of the girls....
Fifteen minutes later.... the spell fizzled.
“It was worth a shot.” Buffy said before standing.
“It should have produced something. This spell always has some type of result.” Willow said with a frown.
“Hey, does anybody else see that?” Dawn said as she stood up and walked towards one part of the attic.
“What is it?” Buffy asked as she pulled out a stake.
“It's that boombox.” Faith said. “The TV is working!”
“It's Xander!” Dawn said as she looked at the tiny black and white screen.
“He looks like he's in pain!” Willow said as she and the others stared at Xander's face that filled the tiny screen.
Faith stared at the screen for a moment. “I don't think he's in pain Red. Is there any way we can zoom out?”
“We could fiddle with the tuner.” Buffy suggested as she touched the knob.
“Don't!” Willow half shouted but it was too late.
The screen was filled with static before being replaced with another image.
The girls all twisted their heads to one side and Buffy covered her sister's eyes.
“I want to see!” Dawn whined while Faith laughed.
“I told you he wasn't in pain Red.” Faith said before pausing... “Though he's probably going to be hurting in the morning.” she finished with a smirk.
“What else can we see?” Dawn asked as she reached for the tuning knob with her eyes still covered.
This time there was a song as well as an eerily familiar opening sequence. “Scooby Dooby Doo.. Where are you.... We've got some things to do now...”
There was the original gang but there was a new scene where the whole group was running from a person in a suit of armor before they ducked behind their van.
What happened next was completely different. The armored man flew back and Xander stepped out from behind the van with his battle axe in his hands with the large blunted side facing outwards with a wicked grin on his face.
The next scene was Xander chasing Scrappy Doo out of the frame followed by a yelping sound and a spray of blood.
Faith laughed. “I always hated that little turd.”
“Xander's a cartoon now?” Dawn asked, confused.
“He's with the Scooby Gang!... How did that happen?” Willow asked.
“He looks Happy.” Buffy said morosely. “What else can we see...?
“We could always try to change the channel again.” Faith said before doing just that.
“Like, do you still get homesick?” Shaggy asked Xander as the two men sat in a booth at a diner.
Xander gave Shaggy a look. “I'll always miss my girls Shaggy. Am I still trying to find a way back? Not actively. Things are different here. I... feel lighter, happier. There's this shroud of despair and finality back home that smothered everything and everybody at times. Since I've gotten here... my priorities have shifted. Even if I found a way... I honestly don't know really.” Xander admitted.
“You don't want to go back?” Fred asked as he pulled up a chair and sat down with the chair back facing the table.
“Fred, the stuff I've seen would give your nightmares nightmares. You guys have creative criminals like ninety five percent of the time and the supernatural the other five percent.. My home and what we deal with was the complete opposite. They deal with the monsters so much, sometimes my friends forget who the monsters are.” Xander said as he set his mug to the side of table so the waitress would refill his coffee.
“I still find that hard to believe.” Fred said with a frown.
“You're an optimist. Lucky bastard.” Xander said with a grin. “If I could go back... it'd be hell. I'm happy here. I've got Velma and you guys. Even if this is all some crazy dream... waking up would be hard to do. Get it?”
“I do.” Fred said with a nod.
Back with the girls....
Buffy turned off the TV. “We've got our answer. He's happy.” She said with a sniff before heading towards the door.
“If he comes back, he comes back. He's got a slice of the good life. I can't hate him for it.” Faith said with a shrug as she stared at the tiny blank screen. “I'm goin' out for a smoke.” She said before leaving the attic.
Willow wiped her eyes and followed, leaving Dawn to be the last in the attic. She stared at the blank screen for a moment before heading downstairs.
Just before she reached the door..... the TV flickered back on and Xander's voice filled the attic.
“I may never see them again. That hurts like hell guys, it really does. The thing is, they're my family. No matter where I am, they're with me. Just like I'll always be with them. I don't have to explain that you guys do I?”
“Like we get it Xander.” Shaggy said.
“Good, now enough heart to heart. I'm getting misty.” Xander said.
“Well lets eat then!” Shaggy said. “I'm just glad Scooby's with the girls.”
The bell to the diner's door dinged.
“I think you spoke too soon Shaggy.” Fred said with a laugh.
The screen went blank and Dawn turned the light in the attic off before closing the door.
They had their answer. Xander was where he belonged.
