Chapter 1: It Has To Start Somewhere

This is a thing called a present,
The whole thing starts with a box.
A box? Is it steel? Are there locks?
Is it filled with a pox? A pox?
How delightful, a pox!

Song: The Town Meeting Song Songwriter:Danny Elfman
From: “Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas”

“I have never seen such a gland in any human body before ladies,” ‘Ducky’ was quite certain of his findings!

“We assure you we do believe you Doctor Mallard,” Mina said with a gentle pat on the man’s shoulder.

“I wish I did Madam Mina, I just wish I did,” the doctor said shaking his head.

“Yes, I understand,” Mina smiled.

“Actually, milady, I believe that I have seen something like it before,” Doctor Hall interrupted.

Buffy, Mina, and ‘Ducky’ turned to look at the man once called Jack-the-Ripper.

“Back when I was in Medical School in Edinburgh in 1875, we received a body for dissection from the city a young man, an unknown sailor supposedly. He’d been stabbed in the back by a mugger. The mugger was captured and swore that the man had stepped out in front of him ‘from out of thin air’. The police said that he had been dressed strangely, but we never saw any clothing. While we were dissecting him my lab mate John Watson found just such a gland in the man’s brain, in roughly the same location we found this one. I believe it was still on display in the Medical College Museum when I moved back to London to be with…my…urhmm...mother.” Jack looked them in the eyes until they turned away. The coldness in those icy blue eyes whenever he mentioned his mother was legendary.

“He likely did step out of thin air, out of another reality at least,” ‘Ducky said, then added, “You went to Edinburgh, actually Ian so did I, in a different reality of course. I remember a time…”

“Maybe you can tell Dr. Hall the story later, ‘Ducky’. We have to find out as much as we can about this gland,” Buffy smiled at the old Doctor. “What do we know about the effects, anything, nothing, or something?”

“Actually I believe that Abby, and your younger sibling are working on that just now,” ‘Ducky’ said gravely. “Young Lady Summers-Pratt was not happy at all, if I may say.”

“If Dawnie isn’t happy about something that glows green and opens portal I’m worried,” Buffy said ominously.

“So, Dawnie what’s the verdict,” Abby asked?

Dawn just sat with her head down shaking it sadly.

“C’mon Dawn it can’t be that bad…can it,” Abby was getting a little worried?

“Think of a bomb that is ready to explode and there is absolutely no way to shut it down,” Dawn groaned. “Better yet think of the mythological tale of Pandora’s Box…but one that the lid has not only been opened but its been torn off and ripped into little pieces, and the pieces burned to ash. That is what we have here,” she looked up at Abby her eyes bright with tears.

Abby’s made an ‘Oh’ face and her eyes went wide.

“I used to be The Key a glowing green ball of energy that would open dimensions. I’m human now, but I absorbed a lot of Key energy. This gland seems to be filled with that same energy, but…and it’s a big but…it has no intelligence to direct that power. Rivera e Villalobos may have been a fool, and a homicidal idiot but he had enough intellect to control the energy. When he died the gland continued to broadcast its energy. That’s why the damned thing doesn’t decay the energy keeps renewing its cellular structure.” Dawn looked at Abby with hopelessness on her face.

“In other words this Pandora gland is breaking down the walls of reality,” Abby, always pale, was nearly chalk white.

“It’s not quite that bad, but it is going to be opening doors in this reality leading to others, and vice versa,” Dawn wiped her eyes, and picked up the phone, “unless we can figure a way to shield it, or encase it in something it can’t broadcast through, yes.” She said into the phone, “Willow emergency meeting of all of the leaders, doctors, witches, and warlocks, ASAP, bring Johnny, and Spike too this is real important.”

Every chair in the room was filled. Mina sat at the head of the long glass, and chrome table, on her right was Buffy. Vlad sat on her left. To Buffy’s right sat Xander, then Dawn, Spike, Willow, and Johnny. Next to Vlad sat Abby, Marie, Jethro, ‘Ducky’, Ian, and Drusilla. Dawn was crying and shaking, and William had her arm wrapped around her shoulders.

“What the hell is going on,” Jethro roared!

“Just exactly that Agent Gibbs,” Dawn shouted between sobs.

“Hell is coming,” Buffy groaned. “Portals are beginning to open all over this world, and others. Things, people good and evil are crossing between worlds, all of the worlds, all of the realities. Pandora’s Box, or rather Pandora’s gland has been activated!”

As if to prove her point two very strange portals opened in opposite sides of the room. The portal on the right looked like a ball of broken blue-green glass spinning around in the air. The portal on the left was like a crack in reality.

From the right hand portal stepped a somewhat unprepossessing man. He wore a olive green British Army jacket a tan bush shirt, and a pair of tan trousers, with battered old brown shoes. His blonde hair was almost shoulder length and unkempt, and he hadn’t shaved for several days/

From the left hand portal a dark haired man wearing a world war two R.A.F. overcoat, blue airman’s trousers, and a pale grey shirt was literally thrown into the room. He was immediately followed by a demonic looking creature dressed in dark green coveralls. It appeared to be lacking ears, and a nose. What it did have was a row of very sharp teeth with pronounced canines, and deep set black eyes. The man in the trench-coat leaped to his feet drew a gun and promptly shot the creature in the forehead!

Both men turned slowly and looked at the assembled people in the room. The blond frowned with a look of concern, the dark haired one smiled winningly, like a con-man who'd just found a mark.
