27 Sacred Twins
a/n: I was going to wait but you will all be in suspense long enough waiting for the next story. So here it is, the end.
Xander felt his heart stop beating and his powers fade as they came upon their first obstacle.
"Hello lover." the thing that was once Forrest Gates said with a parody of a smile. Behind him, Walsh and Angelo grinned.
"Xander focus," Stella said, "that is not Forrest."
"Of course I am lover." Forrest said, "I’m better, I’m upgraded."
Xander felt tears in his eyes as he shook his head, "My Forrest wouldn't want this. You are a distraction. One I will give peace to because Forrest would want that." He closed his eyes and held out his hands, "I loved you."
In an instant, the three parodies of life were consumed in flames and then fell as ash on the floor.
"It’s alright," Stella whispered as Xander collapsed on the floor, his body racking with sobs. "You did the right thing. Forrest was dead and letting his body live on like that disgraced his name. He is at peace now."
Xander nodded and with his sisters' help stood. "I don't know if I will survive this."
"You will." Annabeth promised.
“That was just the first obstacle.” Stella said softly rubbing Xander’s back, “To throw you off, and get you to second guess yourself. You’re stronger than that. There’s nothing wrong with what you did. You’re saving lives; you’re saving your brother.”
Xander took a deep breath and nodded slowly. “Let’s go. We don’t have much time, and I know what we will be facing next.”
Stella and Annabeth nodded, then made their way beyond the room to a hidden compartment that led to another set of rooms not on the base blue prints. That’s what happened when you saved money and used an old underground bunker for a secret lab. Things sometimes stayed hidden.
Aya and Riley waited.
Aya had turned into his nightmare. His hair and eyes were black, making his pale skin look like death. His clothes were black and flowed with an invisible wind, just like in his nightmare. This was Aya’s darker half, the part of him that represented the darkness in all of them.
“So, how do we defeat them without killing them?” Xander asked, frowning at his brother. “At least I get the one nightmare now.”
“How does this Adam control Aya?” Annabeth asked, watching Riley wearily as the blond produced his own sword.
“Blood.” Xander said softly, “One of the zombies injected him with the demon’s blood before she was killed.”
Aya smiled. “Hello, brother.” he said in a light voice that was a bit condescending. “Come to join us in the evolution of man?”
“I’ve come to bring you home.” Xander answered calmly, “Both of you.”
“We don’t need to come home.” Aya said, nodding to Riley who stepped forward toward Annabeth. “We are home, but if you give up now, we will welcome you with open arms.”
“Xander.” Annabeth said, stepping away from her siblings to have access to her blades without risking anyone. “You are twins.”
“Yeah?” Xander asked, confused, as Aya grinned at him. “What about it?”
“Blood calls to blood.” Annabeth said, never taking her eyes off Riley. “Your blood calls to his.”
“Oh great gods.” Stella said in understanding. “Of course we didn’t think of that. It’s too simple.”
“Oh great, the world ends because it’s too simple.” Xander said dryly. He stepped forward, “Aya, I know you’re still in there. I know you would never give up. Fight it, Aya.”
“Why would I fight perfection?” Aya asked blankly, as if the entire proposition was simply stupid. He stepped forward until he was standing before his twin, and despite the height difference, now more than ever they looked like the twins they were. To Xander it was wrong, they were supposed to be different, they were supposed to laugh when someone was surprised that they were twins.
“Because it’s not perfection.” Xander whispered, “It’s an abomination. Something that isn’t supposed to be.”
“Why would you say that?” Aya asked angrily. He took a step back, then turned away, like a villain about to resite their last monologue. “What Adam will do for the world will be glorious. This is what we were born for Xander, to be his generals, ushering a new life, a better life, for the human race. They will no longer be aimless, but have purpose. Imagine it Xan, a perfect world and us beside its savior.”
Xander stared at his twin for a long moment, then rolled his eyes. “I can’t believe you just monologued.”
“If you won’t join us, then you are the enemy.” Aya said, shaking his head and stepping back more. “Kill them.”
Riley’s first blow was barely blocked by Annabeth before they really started fighting, trading blows. Annabeth tried her hardest to keep her blows non-fatal while Riley tried his hardest to kill her since she was the one obviously armed. What he wasn’t expecting was Stella sneaking up behind him with a sedative that she jammed in his neck.
“Tie him up.” Xander said, nodding to the women as he watched Aya frown indifferently. “We’ll figure out how he’s being controlled in a minute.”
“You won’t stop us.” Aya said to his twin.
“Try me.” Xander said, calling up his less aggressive powers. He just needed to pin Aya down until he figured out how to defeat Adam.
“There is one difference between us Xander.” Aya said, watching the air around Xander’s hands start to frost.
“What is that?” Xander asked, watching Aya carefully.
Aya produced an energy ball in his palm. “I plan to kill you.”
Xander threw his own energy ball to counter his twin’s. “You won’t kill me Aya.” he promised, countering another energy ball. “We are too much alike. You could say we have something very important in common.”
Aya snorted, “And what’s that?”
Xander struck just as Annabeth threw her dagger between them. Xander caught the blade of the knife on its downward arch, grabbing Aya’s hand at the same time. With his free hand, he jerked the blade out of their joined hands, slicing open the skin of their palms.
“Blood.” Xander whispered, squeezing their hands together. “Blood calls to blood, god to god, twin to twin. I love you Aya. I will go to Hades and back for you, I will bring hell on Earth for you. Come back to me. Blood to blood.”
Aya gasped, his eyes bleeding to their normal violet color, soon after his hair to red and his clothes to white. “Xan?”
Xander took a shuttered breath, “I’m here. I’m here, baby brother. I will always be here.”
Aya’s eyes filled with tears and he collapsed in his twins arms. “I had the most horrible dream Xanny. I dreamed Walsh took me hostage and made me do such evil things. I dreamed I was fighting you. It was all a dream, right?”
Xander bowed his head, slowly releasing his twins hand to hug him tightly. “Yeah, all a bad dream.” he whispered.
“What is taking them so long?” Buffy shouted, killing another demon with her axe.
“You think its easy killing a random cybernetic demon?” Spike asked, staking a vampire. He was ever so glad the twins had given him their version of an Amara ring so he wasn’t going to turn to dust the moment some demon got the drop on him.
“Why not?” Buffy whined.
“How many of these freaking things are there?” Dean asked, sneering at another demon as it died by his gun.
“It was meant to be a slaughter.” Sam pointed out, cocking his shotgun again. “We have to hold the fort. We have to survive.”
“Duh.” Dean said sarcastically. He growled as another soldier went down, ripped to pieces by a large demon.
Sam ducked a flying body part. “That’s gross.”
Dean looked over his shoulder, “Yeah,” he agreed.
Don paused in his fight to look around. There was carnage everywhere, and still more demons fighting humans in a seemingly never-ending battle. Adam was nothing if not good at preparing for a long battle. He knew the humans would have to be out numbered because they had the ability to bunker down and fire from long distances. There was probably a whole group of demons waiting for the ammunition to be exhausted. At that point the humans would be forced to fight hand-to-hand.
Luckily, given significant warning, the armory had been guarded well and the hunters had brought their own weapons and bags full of ammunition. Given that the hunters knew how to kill most of the demons with one shot, they could be here for days and still win.
But how many humans would die in the process?
“He has this chip in his chest.” Aya said, kneeling down next to Riley. “Graham!”
“How did you know he was waiting?” Xander asked as the god appeared by their side.
Aya smacked his twin on the arm, “Grammy always waits for me.”
“That’s such a loaded answer.” Graham said dryly as he ran a hand over Riley’s torso, pausing just over his central nervous system.
“Well, I don’t really remember a lot of what’s been happening.” Aya said, shrugging, “I just want to fall back on something I know.”
Graham leaned over and kissed his husband on the forehead. “Everything is going to be fine.” He held out his hand, showing the microchip from Riley’s chest.
“Get him out of here.” Xander said, nodding, “Start evacuating all humans and allies. I’ll deal with Adam.”
“WE will deal with Adam.” Aya said, glaring at his twin. “You won’t defeat him alone. We’re supposed to be the sacred twins. Let’s live up to our name.”
“That was worse than you monologing.” Xander muttered and stood.
“I monologed?” Aya asked, bemused, “When?”
“About five minutes ago. But you got better.” Xander said, smiling at Aya.
Aya rolled his eyes, then looked down at his clothing, “What the hell am I wearing?”
“Keep it on.” Xander said, then nodded to the others. “By the way, meet Annabeth, she’s our half sister, and Stella too.”
“Huh?” Aya asked, confused, still looking down at his clothing.
“They’re daughters of Athena.” Xander explained.
Aya plucked at his clothes, “But we’re sons of Don and Rein.” he argued.
“First we were sons of Athena and Castiel.” Xander said, rolling his eyes.
“Does that mean mom and dad are really Athena and Castiel?” Aya asked absently.
“I think his brain reset.” Xander said, shaking his head. He stood, getting Aya to his feet, “Focus Aya. We have to go destroy Adam, then you can be as blond and ditzy as you want.”
“I don’t like this outfit.” Aya said as his clothes changed into something more to his liking.
“We’re goners.” Graham said with a sigh, but put a hand on the girls’ shoulders as Riley leaned against him and they vanished. A moment later, he returned, kissed Aya soundly, then vanished again.
“Are you going to be ok?” Xander asked, putting his hands on Aya’s shoulders. “Or are you going to obsess over your clothes a little more?”
“How are we going to stop Adam?” Aya asked instead. “If he could do all this, how are we possibly going to be able to stop him?”
“Simple.” Xander said, smirking, “We have something Adam doesn’t.”
“What’s that?” Aya asked, confused, “Don’t say something cheesy.”
“We have power, idiot.” Xander said, rolling his eyes. “We have the power of gods and witches as one.”
“Yeah,” Aya agreed with a nod. “Let’s go kick him then.”
“But how.” Xander mused.
“Are you stalling?” Aya asked.
“He brought Forrest back.” Xander said softly.
“Oh Xanny.” Aya said, hugging his twin. “What happened?”
“I sent their bodies to their final resting.” Xander whispered. He huffed and paced the room, glad for the lull before facing the next challenge. “It was odd. Seeing them, they were not like Adam. Forrest was very obviously dead. His eyes had that look, all milky white and horrible. I thought with his minions, they’d look almost alive and human like Adam….” He trailed off frowning.
“What?” Aya asked, frowning back.
“If Adam was dead. I mean if the human he was, was dead, why aren’t his eyes milky? It’s a breakdown of protein right? Something that happens after death?” Xander looked around the room and found a computer in the corner. Going to it, he accessed the data files, then typed in his override codes. Within minutes, he found what he was looking for.
“Oh,” Xander said after a moment of searching.
“What?” Aya said, looking over Xander’s shoulder.
“George Harrison, former navy seal. He was part of Walsh’s protection detail until he was killed. Well, not killed. According to this, Walsh used an experimental drug to keep his brain functioning and started transplanting demon and cybernetic parts in the hopes that he would live.” Xander typed a few key entries until he found want he was looking for. “He was noted by Walsh as being ‘like a son’, same as Riley.”
“No wonder Adam likes Riley so much.” Aya mused. “So, technically he was never really dead. He was special because he was never dead. If he uses the others for parts, they will eventually fall apart.”
“Eventually he would figure that out.” Xander said. “His first experiment with that didn’t last long enough for him to find out about that.”
Aya caressed the picture of the man Adam once was with his finger. “He was innocent. He never asked for this. Is he evil because of what was done to him? Would he be evil if he were still human?”
“I don’t know.” Xander said, staring at the screen. “We can’t really find out now, can we?”
“Why not?” Aya asked. “If he was never dead, then he could be made whole again. You said it yourself, we can do things he can’t. One of those things is making him whole again.”
“After all he did?” Xander asked softly.
“George didn’t do anything.” Aya pointed out. “Does he really deserve to die as a monster?”
Xander took a deep breath. “No.” he said, taking Aya’s hand. “He deserves the same changes every other human does, and if he has to day, better to die as a human.”
“Let’s go then.” Aya said, smiling at his twin.
“What now?” John asked his step father as the last of them were teleported to the mansion. Everyone who had survived had been safely removed from the base and the horde of demons magically sealed inside to be dealt with later. Adam had done a good job at recruiting demons who were evil in nature instead of those who were just desperate enough to fight. The few innocent demons caught in the crossfire had wisely stayed in their cells, away from the fighting, and had been transported to a secure location to be sorted through and returned to their homes later.
Now all they could do was wait for Aya and Xander to reappear.
“We have no choice, but to wait.” Don said tiredly as he wet a rag to wipe blood from his face. “They have to face Adam alone. There is no way around it.”
“That’s stupid.” John argued, but merely sat at the kitchen table. “Why only them?”
“Because it’s their fight.” Don said sitting as well. “I don’t like it John, but I like the alternatives even less. They won’t fail. They can’t fail.”
“If they do?” John asked softly.
Don shook his head. “We won’t survive long enough to care.”
“What are you talking about?” John asked, frowning.
“If they fail and Adam wins, the Air Force is going to level the town. With everyone and everything in it.” Don said tiredly. “They won’t wait for an evacuation. They aren’t even going to allow it.”
“Do the others know?” John asked, glancing at the kitchen doorway.
“No.” Don admitted. “And they won’t know, because it won’t matter. Xander and Aya will succeed.”
“Are you sure?” John asked.
“Are you doubting them?” Don asked back.
John blinked and frowned. He stared at the doorway for a long moment, then slowly shook his head. “No, I suppose not.”
When they entered the furthest room in the hidden section of the old base, Adam was waiting. The former man stood at a console, frowning at the security feed as one by one the humans and some of the demons were whisked away by the blond god. He had not anticipated that his former teammate had been changed in such a way. If he had, he would have made sure Graham was on his list of people to manipulate. He would have used Aya to control the god at first until other measures could be taken, then he would have used the added power to jump start his plans for a new world order. One full with the perfection of cybernetics and demon weaponry.
It was no matter; once he had converted the brother, it would only be a matter of time before Graham Miller was converted as well.
However, when he looked up from the videos, Adam frowned.
“Hello Adam.” Xander said, clutching his twin’s hand tightly in his own. “Or should I say George.”
Adam frowned, “Interesting.”
“Not really.” Aya said, smirking a little, “DNA is stronger than crazy science. Xan and I have shared blood longer, so of course once I was reminded of that, you no longer had control.”
“Hey, does that mean I have control of you, now?” Xander mused to his twin.
“Yes Xan, I want to do everything you say and have your kittens.” Aya said sarcastically. “Honestly, you are such an idiot.”
Adam moved out from behind the console. “It is no matter. I will simply use your parts.” he said, ignoring the banter, and held out his arm. Instead of the bone stake appendage, the arm converted into a rail gun via cybernetic transplantation.
The twins rolled their eyes and as one waved their free hands in an arch, forcing the gun to convert back into an arm.
“We are not here to kill you Adam.” Aya said softly, catching the monsters attention. “George, whatever. We are here to make things right.”
“You see, unlike what you intended to do to the dead, you never died. Every part of you was transplanted from a living host. Even your human self.” Xander explained, giving Adam a sympathetic look. “And your creations would never have been like you, even if you tried the process on someone living. You are unique because you were never supposed to be.”
“We had thought to kill you outright. But then we thought of your human part. The part that was still innocent of all the evil things you did.” Aya continued softly, giving Adam a sympathetic look. By now the air was humming with the power radiating from the twins. It came easy to them, as if their choice was the right one to make and all the powers on Earth and in the heavens were backing them. “And if you die still, well, you die human.”
“What Forrest would have wanted.” Xander whispered, “A gift I cannot give him, but he would want it given to you.”
Adam took a step back. He could feel the power caress his demonic skin. It felt wrong, yet a part of him deep down and buried answered the call of that power. “Impossible.”
“We bring back that which was lost.” the twins said together. “We fix that which was broken.”
“Adam shall be no more.” Xander said softly.
“The man he was will once more be whole.” Aya said.
Then as one. “So is our power. So is our love. This is our Will, so shall it be.”
Adam cried out as a soft white light engulfed him, then filled the room. As the light faded, a body fell to his knees, breathing harshly. George Harrison looked up in time to see the twins collapse on the ground before fading away, leaving him alone in the underground room.
Human and whole again.
A/n: George is the real name of the actor that played Adam on BTVS, no name for the human he was was ever given- or at least none that Wiki knew about- so Calia and I decided to use the actor’s name. I also thought that given their unique situation I could do something that I have never encountered before in fanfiction, giving Adam his humanity back, the show never really got into if Adam was dead or alive when Walsh started grafting demon parts onto him, and one of the graphic novels implied that he was a favorite much like Riley, so I could see her trying very hard to keep him alive. Given that Aya and Xander together would have that type of power, why not make him human again?
And no, you won’t find out what happened to the twins until the next story, which I won’t start until after I’ve completed finals and read the first two stories over again, and watched at least the first bit of BTVS S4.
Also I would like to give a very special thanks to Vanessa my beta, and Caliadragon. Without you two, I would have never finished this story. I would also like to thank the various other writers that let me bounce ideas off of in the past, I am grateful you were there.
Next up Key Secrets, the final installment of the Soul Twins Trilogy.
