Chapter One

Disclaimer: Neither BtVS, The Magnificent Seven TV show nor it’s wonderful ATF AU created by Mog belong to me. I’m just playing in the sandbox.

Xander sat with a sketchpad perched on his lap, feet resting on the edge of the bed. He was using this time to capture the designs for a couple of pieces he’d had floating around in his head for a while. His business was doing well, and Ezra had advised doing some furniture as showpieces to further encourage customers.

Shifting uncomfortably, Xander wished he’d listened to the advice given to him by the members of team seven, rather than assuming they were winding him up, and brought something to use as padding. The hospital chairs should be registered as instruments of torture.

Realising the body in the bed was beginning to stir, Xander moved so he would be easily in view. Blue eyes cracked slowly open, slamming shut again with a wince.

“Howdy, Cowboy!” Xander piped up cheerily. Smiling at the frown the appeared on Vin’s face at the sound of the taunting nickname, Xander sat quietly until the other man managed to focus on him fully.

“Xan? Watcha ya doing here?” Vin’s expression changed to one of panic. “Where’s Chris? Is everyone ok?”

“Nice, thanks for the appreciation. Everyone is fine.” Xander waited until he was sure Vin was listening properly. “Nathan threatened to drug Chris if he didn’t let Nate drive him home to get some sleep. Barely left your side these last few days-- although, as I hear it, that’s perfectly normal. Buck took JD back to the CDC,” Xander snorted at the apt moniker for the apartment; no one could deny its accuracy - the place was a health hazard. “Poor guy looked like his eyes were about ready to fall out. Ezra and Josiah were ordered back to the office.” Seeing the last of the tension leave the sharpshooter’s battered form, Xander decided it was time to let the mockery begin.

“So, here I am on my first shift of ‘Vin Watch’. It’s very exciting, I’ve been keeping notes.” Xander smirked as he waved the pad in his hand before settling back in the chair and pretending to read. “2 pm, twitched right leg. 3.45 pained moan followed by cussing. 4.30 sleeping like a baby.”

“Shut up, Lance.” Vin was feeling a little aggrieved that the others had left him with Xander. On a bad day his friend could be worse than JD.

Xander frowned. “Just remember: you’re laid up, unable to evade me, and for the next two hours - completely at my mercy…”

“Quit ya chatting and get me the hell outta here, Xander,” Vin snarled as he tried to lever himself upright.

“Wow. Grumpy, aren’t you? Is it the drugs talking? I’m going to say yes, because then there’ll be less with the hurt feelings, and you won’t have to bake me cookies,” Xander stated matter-of-factly. Vin stared in disbelief for a moment.

“Xander?”

“Yes, Vin?”

“Are ya gonna help me?”

“No, Vin.” Xander plastered an innocent look on his face before relenting at seeing just how badly Vin wanted to get out of there. Best to head it off at the pass.

“Mr. Larabee threatened severe physical harm to my person should I let anything happen to you, up to and including allowing your premature escape from these delightful facilities.”

Vin glared before backing down, seeing no give in Xander’s expression. “You’ve been spending too much time with Ezra.”

“How could one possibly spend too much time with one’s beloved father? He is, after all, someone I should look up to and emulate. Can you think of anyone more suitable? Refined, well mannered, cultured….”

“Xander.”

“Yes, Vin?”

“Shut up.”

“Yes, Vin.”
