Poke with a Stick
Chapter Seven : Poke with a Stick
Occurs after On a Strangers Porch.
Buffy meets Chris and explains a few things to him
Chris was not happy. Stuck in the hall waiting to talk to some Judge at their request and it was not one of the judges they usually went in front of. Chris had gotten a call first thing that morning with the implied order to show up, no reason given, and no delay That was an hour and forty-seven minutes ago. Chris shuddered to think of what chaos in the office he could return to. Unsupervised his team could level a city if they had reason to, and if they were determined being supervised wouldn’t stop them it just might take a little longer. If this judge made him wait much longer he might take a vacation and let Travis deal with the fall out or fire department, hopefully not both.
The door to the Judge’s quarters in the courthouse opened and a male voice commanded, “Come in Larabee.”
Chris walked into the office and through the clerk’s space when the judge waved him through and closed the door behind him. An attractive young woman about the same age as Xander and Willow was balanced on the edge of the desk.
“I’m Buffy Summers. We didn’t get a chance to meet when you were in Cleveland. Willow and Xander don’t know I’m in town, but I wanted a chance to introduce my self.” Buffy said meeting Chris’s still displeased glare.
“I’ve been interested in meeting you also.” Chris said, he had wanted to meet Buffy but to meet her in an unfamiliar judge’s chambers was unexpected.
Buffy’s hard demeanor didn’t match her appearance of pleasantly passing idle time, “I’ll be honest with you Chris. Right now you’re the unknown thing to be poked with a stick to see what it is. I had a dad until I was about fifteen and a great mom until she died. Willow’s parents provided her with a building to live in and money for food and clothes. Xander had the basement he paid rent for until he moved out. His landlords were loud drunks who he shared a last name with. Good parents are very strange to both of them. I know you’re a dad, you are still a dad to Adam. You didn’t choose to stop being his daddy. Xander and Willow had each other when they were little, remember that if they don’t act like a son or daughter should act. They know how to be brother, sister, best friend. Being a daughter or son is new. They are my best friends, my family. Honestly trying on the family thing is great but if you neglect, hurt them, push them away, even if it was for their own good, I will come back here and take a long time explaining to you why it was a bad idea to ignore what I just told you. I have a shovel that’s sharp and rusted. A regular garden shovel is for ex-boyfriends or girlfriends, I have a special shovel for you.”
Chris’s glare found an equal in the slight woman in front of him. “Xander was an unexpected surprise. We’re taking things one day at a time. With my job and what I’ve done I have enemies, and hell yes I worry about them. I already lost Sarah and Adam because my past. I’m terrified that I’ll loose anyone again, but I have learned to grab every moment I can and fight for more.”
Neither Chris or Buffy said anything. Chris feeling exposed letting someone know what might be his worst and biggest fear. Finally Buffy relaxed asking, “Are they happy?”
“Yes.” Unhesitant and sure.
