Notes: For BtVS, the fic begins after the episode Helpless, with a few
major changes (beyond the fact that Dawn already exists and is a freshman). First, in the ep Amends, Willow and Oz did not get back together. Willow is single. Also, after Angel's return, he and Buffy never got back together.
"Well, you did cheat on him, Will. The whole kissing Xander thing."
The redhead standing next to Buffy Summers sighed. "I know. I was a bad, bad Willow. But... You know, I was thinking... If I kissed Xander, doesn't that mean... Maybe I wasn't entirely happy with Oz or something?" Willow Rosenberg questioned, turning her head to look at the Slayer. "I mean, when you and Angel were dating, you never even thought about cheating on him... And I really shouldn't have brought him up. I'm sorry."
Buffy shrugged. "It's okay. I'm getting more and more used to hearing his name. It's not a big deal, Willow. And you're right. I didn't cheat on Angel."
"And I did cheat on Oz. I'm a bad, bad Willow. I deserve a spanking. Or something," the redhead announced, and Buffy had to smother the smile that threatened to appear on her face. Somehow, she didn't think that would go over very well, not when Willow was busy lamenting what an awful person she was. Truthfully, Buffy didn't think Willow was awful at all. Just a little confused.
"Willow... Oz was your first boyfriend."
"And Angel was-"
"My first lover. Not my first boyfriend, though. I was kind of a serial dater back when I lived in Los Angeles. I made Cordelia look steady," the blonde Slayer said, then cringed at the realization that she'd just said one of the worst possible names to say in front of either of her best friends. "Will, I-"
"Don't worry about it. I deserve to hear her name all the time. I deserve the guilt-"
"I cheated on a guy. When I lived in Los Angeles. I think it was just... It wasn't even like the thing with you and Xander. I mean, you two have been best friends for so long. You're a girl, and he's a guy. Tension of the sexual variety is inevitably going to appear at some point in the friendship. It's the 'when Harry met Sally' syndrome. At some point during a relationship between two members of opposite sexes, one of them is going to want to sleep with the other."
"I thought that one was covered for me and Xander back when I had a crush on him for five years," Willow said, a rueful look on her face, and Buffy smiled slightly.
"And maybe you never did entirely work through your feelings back then. You did go from crushing on Xander to finding out about him and Cordelia to dating Oz pretty quickly," the blonde said, and Willow looked thoughtful for a moment before her face fell completely, distress evident in her huge eyes.
"I used Oz, didn't I? I used Oz to get over Xander-"
"No, Willow! I didn't mean that!" the Slayer interjected, stopping and turning to look at her friend, grabbing Willow's shoulders and shaking her slightly in an effort to get the other girl's attention. The redhead's eyes were even larger than usual as she stared at her friend. "Willow, you didn't use Oz. I've seen the two of you together. You loved him, and he loved you. But maybe you just weren't ready for all the serious, heavy stuff. Maybe he's not the guy for you."
"And if he is?" Willow asked, fighting a sniffle, and Buffy gave her friend a quick hug.
"Then he'll come back to you. Got it?"
"Got it. Of course, I'm taking love advice from someone who's as single as I am, but... It was either you or... Well, no one."
Buffy laughed. "I feel so loved. Now come on, Will. Let's patrol."
The redhead nodded in agreement as she followed the blonde Slayer, a small frown coming to her face. "Why am I the one patrolling with you tonight, anyway? I mean... I'm not a Slayer. Faith's the Slayer."
"She's off doing her own patrol, and besides, I thought you could use the chance to get out of the house and-"
"Stop moping?" Willow finished for her, and Buffy had the grace to look sheepish.
"Something like that," she conceded, waiting for the other girl to get annoyed about being taken pity on or something, but Willow just smiled.
"Thanks. I think I really needed it," she said, then both girls suddenly froze. "Did you hear that?"
"I've got Slayer hearing. If you heard it, hell yeah, I heard it. Stay behind me, okay? No heroics."
"Like I ever do anything heroic," Willow returned as she followed her friend, and Buffy refrained from commenting on how heroic she thought Willow had been trying the spell to restore Angel's soul... And actually ending up restoring it, albeit too late. Willow was never good with compliments, well not unless they were about test scores or something...
Her expression serious, Buffy ducked beneath some low branches as she and Willow made their way through the graveyard, the Slayer pulling a stake out of her sleeve, just in case the noises turned out to be a vampire... Which was probably fairly likely considering the fact that hello... Graveyard.
"Just a second, Will-"
"No, Buffy, look," the redhead insisted, and the blonde frowned as she looked over to where Willow was pointing, a look of confusion coming to her face as the hand holding the stake dropped to her side.
There was a girl in the graveyard. Well, not really a girl, but a teenager, probably about the same age as Buffy and Willow... Quickly, the Slayer and the would-be Witch made their way over to the girl, Buffy frowning when she took note of the girl's clothing... A long dress that made her think of her Halloween costume from the year before, though its color were more subdued. The girl had what looked to be dark blonde hair that clung wetly to her cheeks, and it took the Slayer a moment to realize that the girl was completely soaked.
"What's going on here?" Buffy muttered without thinking, and the girl's head jerked up, her eyes wide and filled with tears as she took in the sight of the two people in front of her. Her breath came almost in gasps, leading Buffy to believe that whoever she was, she was indeed human.
"What is this place? Where am I? Who are you?" the girl asked in a decidedly British accent, the young woman starting to scramble backwards from them, her bare feet coming out from beneath her long skirts. Quickly, Buffy reached out and grasped the girl's arm, preventing her from moving any further away from them.
"Hey, it's okay. We're not going to hurt you. I'm Buffy, and this is my friend Willow. We live here in Sunnydale."
"Yeah, it's in California," she said, and the girl frowned again.
"California?" she questioned, and Buffy exchanged a look with Willow.
"Yeah, California. But, uh, we'll talk more about that later," the redhead said, biting her lip. "Why don't... Why don't we start off with who you are and where you come from, and then we can try to help you."
"But I don't know!" the girl blurted out, fresh tears coming to her eyes and spilling down her cheeks.
"You don't know where you're from?" Buffy questioned, and the girl shrugged.
"I... No, and... I don't know who I am!"
