I do not own the characters, alas. They belong to Friedman and Whedon. I just play with them and then return without any sort of profit.AUTHOR’S NOTES:
I know I’m late, I’ll be on time with the rest of them, I promise! Real life really interferes with my internet time! Beta credit goes to a good friend of mine, Tara. Thank you!AUTHOR’S NOTES 2:
This series is going to be the conclusion of my piece A Sense of Inevitabilty
. Since the series was cancelled, I really don’t know what to do with it other than complete my OTP of Dawn Summers and Derek Reese.
Derek Reese sat at the table in the Los Angeles County jail waiting for his lawyer to arrive. He wasn’t sure how she was supposed to help him. After all, how could he explain that he had killed Whistler because he developed a computer system that eventually becomes SkyNet and would try to annihilate all of humankind? Even he had to admit that the story was enough to earn him a permanent one-way ticket to a padded cell.
Sitting back in his chair, Derek contemplated the meeting he’d just had with Agent Ellison. Now there was a man who knew more than he should; he just wasn’t ready to admit it to himself yet. Ellison could prove to be a problem later on. Well, a problem if Derek was able to get out of here, that was. It was looking less and less likely that it was going to happen like that, though. The technicalities and ramifications of murder were minor details he hadn’t considered and therefore he didn’t think to plan for it.
Visualizing a future behind bars, for however long it would last, Derek sighed and let his mind wonder once again to what life would have been like if Judgment Day had never happened. Quickly realizing that all that was going to accomplish would be making him even more depressed, he derailed that train of thought immediately. Turning his head, he saw that the clouds had cleared from the sky through the barred windows. Inexplicably, he recalled the girl he’d briefly seen the night before in the convention center. Light brown hair, bright blue eyes… He could feel his heart speeding up as he remembered the soft curve of her lips. It was a brief encounter, but memorable. In another time, another place, he would have approached her, spoken to her, maybe even gotten her number. But not here; not now. In this time, this place, he had a mission to complete. The Reese boys never failed when it came to fulfilling their taskings. That being said, he couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if things were different and he could have seen her again.
His thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the door to his room opening. Not really caring who it was, since he already knew how this was going to play out, he was completely unprepared for the sight that greeted him. He was barely able to mask his surprise. Only the years of training to show no emotion and to keep his body from ever allowing involuntary movement kept him from having the appearance of a teenage boy with raging hormones. He couldn’t help the passing thought that one should be careful what they wish for.
There, standing in the doorway to his interrogation room, was the girl from the night before. And if the suit she was wearing was any indication, she meant business. Derek leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table, handcuffs jangling as he clasped his hands. He watched as the girl considered him, her eyes hardening as she glanced at his hands.
Smirking to himself, he waited for her next move… it could prove to be an interesting day after all.
