Good Morning?

The rumble of her truck's engine alerted Corky to Violet's return. She charged off the couch and crossed to the window. Violet slunk out dropping with a grace all her own. A cigarette hung from her carefully painted lips. The rising sun gave her a soft glow as she approached the house. She swung her foot around to flick something off of her shoe. When she looked back up she waved at Corky while taking the cigarette out. Corky went to let her in.

“Up and about I see.” Violet tossed her shawl to her girlfriend along with a paper bag. Then she anchored a hand onto the mantle above the fireplace while the other hand unclasped her heels. “Where are the in laws?”

“Could only guess.” Corky returned to the couch and slipped both the bag and shawl next to her. “See anybody around?”

Violet paused. She pulled her silver cigarette case out of her purse and lit up a new one. The smile on her face disappeared. She went to the front door and jiggled the knob. When it didn't open she turn back to Corky, the smile plastered tighter than before. “Are you asking me if I was followed?”

Corky sighed. “Did I say anything about being followed?”

“I'm not stupid.” Violet patted her curls and left Corky sitting in the dark room. “I know a hell more about the Mafia than you.”

“Violet?” Corky fell back down on the couch. She got up, traced Violet's steps into the hall. It wasn't long before she bumped into her girlfriend panicking in the middle of the floor. “Violet?”

Corky rushed forward and slid down next to her. She wrapped her arms around bare shoulders and placed soft kisses where Violet's neck met the rest of her. Violent went still. Corky placed a hand on her shoulder and rubbed in tiny circles. “I didn't-I mean...let me help you.”

“We did a very bad thing.” Was the only thing Violet whispered before she eased into Corky's embrace.

Corky pulled her in closer. A red light simmered in the darkness; she stretched out a leg and crushed the forgotten cigarette with her boot. They stayed wrapped in each others embrace listening to the quiet. How long would it last?
