Chapter 1

AN: Yes, I know, this is all dialog. I swear, I'm trying to break the habit.

“God, you know something, I did not realize how huge this place was.”

“The Jeffersonian is one of Americas most prestigious institutions, Booth, it only makes sense that we have a large area. After all we are more than just a museum. We have lots of active experimentation going on.”

“You do? I mean, I know you work with dead guys, but I figured this was a museum. What do you need the space for, storage?”

“No! Well, yes, we do have a great deal of storage space, but we also have a lot of things going on there. Physics experiments, biological research, other anthropological and archeological studies.”

“Really? Huh. So what’s in Pod Five?”

“I’m not sure. I know we do marine research in pod three, but I focus on my area.”

“So… no idea why someone would want to break in?”

“No. The pods are generally used for more secure research. Pod three, the marine pod, has the giant squid’s body in it.”

“So how come you guys don’t rate a pod?”

“Well… they’re harder to get to, for one thing. We’re always coming and going. If it weren’t for you I’d probably have one.”

“So you blame me for not having a pod?”

“What? No. I didn’t say that!”

“But you thought it!”

“You sure about that, Fornell?”

“It sure as hell looks that way, Gibbs. She’s been calling in agents all over the place and had them running around DC.”

“Could be a justified op.”

“With a full communication freeze?”

“I don’t know, Fornell, maybe she thinks there’s a mole.”

“Over a severed hand? Gibbs, she ordered them to detain Warren Bellamy. The architect of the capitol!”

“Alright, Tobias. I’ll get my team together. You had better be right about this.”

“I am, Jethro.”

“So, General, what’s going on?” Colonel O’Neil glanced furtively at his watch. It was only 10, but felt later.

“We’ve got a situation developing in Washington DC. Dr. Jackson, I believe you’re acquainted with Peter Solomon?”

“Peter? Yeah, he’s an old friend of mine. Has something happened to him?”

“That’s what we need you to find out. Earlier this evening we had reports that a severed hand belonging to Mr. Solomon were found in the .”

“Oh god, is he alright?”

“I’m sorry, Dr. Jackson, but we don’t know.”

“Why is SG-1 assigned to this, General? I mean, outside of Dr. Jacksons connections to Mr. Solomon.”

“As I’m sure you’re aware, we’ve been watching several people in Washington lately in conjunction with the Trust. These people are all in high positions, including one Inoue Sato, the director of the CIA. Director Sato is handling the investigation into the Hand and has ordered a complete communications freeze. Needless to say, this set off alarm bells. I need you four to head to DC and find out what’s going on. If the trust is involved, we need to find out why, and what connection they have to Mr. Solomon.”

“I take it were on the next plane out?”

“Actually, Colonel, the Daedelus is in orbit. We’re giving this our highest priority, so you’ll be there within the hour.”

“So much for sleeping on the flight out…”

Timothy McGee glanced at his watch and grimaced as he shut off his computer. It was already past midnight. Gibbs had ordered them all home two hours ago, but he’d had to finish up paperwork.

“Still here, McGee?”

“Boss! Err, yeah. I’m heading home now though. I was just…”

“Don’t bother, McGee. We’ve got another case, apparently.”

“We’ve been up for the last two nights boss. It can’t wait for morning?”

“Not according to Fornell. He says Sato’s gone rogue.”

“Sato? Wait, Inoue Sato? The Director of the CIA?”

“That’s what he said. See what you can find out about what’s been going on tonight. Apparently someone found a severed hand in the ”

“A severed hand? I’ll see what I can find. You want me to call Tony and Ziva?”

“Give them a heads up, but don’t have them come in yet. I’m still not convinced anything’s going on.”

“Got it Boss. What about Abby and Ducky?”

“They still here?”

“Abby is. Not sure about Ducky.”

Gibbs sighed, “Tell Abby to stick around. Same goes for Duck if he hasn’t left yet. If he has, don’t bother. I’ll call him if this pans out.”

“On it.”

“So, Daniel, who’s Peter Solomon?”

“Peter? We met an exhibit back before I entered the Stargate Program actually. He’s been involved with the Jeffersonian for years. We haven’t kept up recently, but, he’s a philanthropist. He sponsored some of the digs I went on years ago.”

“Ah so another rock guy.”

“There’s more than that, Jack. He’s also apparently a high ranking member of the Fraternal Order of Masons.”

“Masons? Like “Who keeps the Martians under wraps” Masons?”

“Who… Jack I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“The Simpsons? Carter?”

“I… don’t get the reference either, Colonel. Sorry.”

“I can’t believe you two!”

“Gibbs, I thought you’d be home by now.”

“Have you talked to Fornell tonight, Leon?”

“Agent Fornell? No, why? Something I should know about?”

“He thinks Sato’s gone rogue.”

“Does he have a reason?”

“Apparently she’s been doing something major tonight in DC.”

“The CIA isn’t cleared to operate on US soil. If there was an operation going down I should’ve been briefed.”

“Could be she suspects a mole.”

“I’ll look into it from my end. Follow up with Fornell. See if he has anything more concrete than ‘something happening.’”

“Jeeze, Bones. How long does it take to get these Pods.”

“I told you it was a long walk, Booth. I’m sure security is already there.”

“We should’ve heard something over the radio by now. How does someone even sneak into this place? I mean, I kept setting off the alarms in your lab for what, the first year?”

“I don’t know, Booth. Maybe… someone invited them in.”

“I guess. Something about this just seems fishy.”

“The marine life is in Pod 3, Booth, not Pod 5.”

“That’s not what I… you know what, forget it.”

“This is , I have visual on the suspect.”

“See? I told you they’d get there before us.”

“I’m an FBI Agent, Bones, I can’t just not go to a crime. Especially not when it’s in the building where you work, even if calling this one building is ridiculous.”

“What’s wrong with calling this one building. It’s a series of connected rooms. It’s large, but,”

“Not the point.”

“What’ve you got for me, McGee.”

“Well, Fornell was definitely right about something going on. Multiple buildings have been closed and the CIA’s got people everywhere.”

“Any word on what?”

“The communication freeze has kept it pretty quite, but there were reports of a severed hand. It looks like Sato’s been calling in pretty impressive assets though, including a chopper. Something’s definitely going on, but I can’t figure out what.”

“Director’s checking on his end. What are the odds that Sato isn’t conducting a sanctioned op?”

“Well given that this was set off by a severed hand I’d say pretty high, Boss.”

“Anything else going on?”

“It’s pretty quite. A report came in about half an hour ago about a break in at the Jeffersonian, but…”

“Chances that it’s a coincidence?”

“Hard to say, Boss. Without knowing whose hand it was it could be nothing. The Jeffersonian does have sensitive areas that probably have fingerprint or biolocks though.”

“Tell Tony and Ziva to head that way. I’m not walking into Sato’s operation until we’re sure she’s off book. The last thing we need to do is screw up there. Find out what’s in the Jeffersonian that someone might be willing to kill to find out."

“Got it boss.”
