The blonde brushed herself off as she looked around the bar. She noticed an eerie silence as the residents quietly drank and looked at each other expectantly. 'That’s just great … telepaths!' She thinks sarcastically to herself. 'What a pain in the ass!'
She looks over at the tiny brunette who is sipping her drink in the corner of the bar. 'That’s the one. Ugh! Why do I have to let my ego get the best of me? I never should have agreed to take that bet against Halfrek.'
She saunters over to the woman and sits beside her.
“Hi there!” Anyanka says.
The brunette looks up in surprise.
“Do you mind if I join you?”
“No, be my guest. You’re not from Betazed are you?”
“Nope, I’m an Earth dweller.” Anyanka states with a cheery grin.
As the brunette nods her head, a tear escapes her eyes at the mention of Earth, thinking about her Imzadi.
“My name is Anyanka and you are?”
“I’m sorry to intrude Deanna, but there appears to be something wrong. Are you ok?”
Deanna quietly asks, “Is it that obvious?”
Anyanka nods her head.
With a shaky smile Deanna comments, “I’m supposed to be the empath.”
Anyanka smiles encouragingly. Deanna is silent again.
'It’s like pulling friggin teeth!' Anyanka thinks to herself.
“So is it man troubles that have got you down? Perhaps I can help?”
“No thanks. It’s alright.”
'I am not going to allow Halfrek win this bet!'
“Did he cheat on you? The man who I used to live with cheated on me with another woman. She wasn’t even particularly attractive.”
“No, he didn’t cheat.”
Anyanka looks at her expectantly and signals the bartender for another round of drinks for both of them.
“Alright, since you persist, he left me! He chose his career over me!”
“Did you ask him to make this choice?”
“Does his job preclude him from having relationships outside of work?”
“Then I don’t understand.”
“He said his career was too important and he couldn’t afford the distractions I would bring!”
“That doesn’t seem very fair!”
“No it doesn’t!” Deanna sniffs.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could just make a wish and something would happen to him?”
“Why? Like what?”
“Why? To get even with him of course! It’ll make you feel better. You could wish that he gets eaten by a pack of wild coyotes! Or wish that a giant spider crushes him like the filthy bug that he is!”
Deanna looks uncomfortable. “I don’t think I would wish for either of those things to happen to him.”
“Well, why don’t you give it a try?”
“I wish I would get stationed on the same star ship as Will Riker, to be a constant reminder of his betrayal of me and of our promises to each other.”
“And what would you do on this ship?”
“I don’t know …. Maybe work as the ship’s counselor?”
“WISH GRANTED!” exclaims Anyanka in a ringing voice. “Best of luck to you!” She says as she leaves the bar. 'Halfrek owes me $1,000 US' she thinks to herself smiling as she fades out of sight.
