“Poor baby, your time came too soon, didn’t it?” Alexx Woods asked her latest visitor.

The unknown victim was young, probably still a teen, twenty if she stretched a bit. He’d been found outside a home near the everglades, covered in mud and more blood than she’d seen in a while. She’d gotten him cleaned up in the morgue before starting the autopsy, revealing soft dark brown hair and beautiful whiskey colored eyes. The wounds that had led to his death, numerous tears and slashes across his chest and stomach, were only the most recent. Scars covered most of his body, silently telling of a hard life.

“What do we have, Alexx?” Horatio asked, stepping up to the other side of her autopsy table.

“A very tragic end to a very painful life,” she sighed. “Cause of death was obvious and very painful. He bled out from this wound here,” she pointed to a long gash under the left side of his ribcage. “It took twenty, maybe thirty minutes.”

“Do we know what caused the wounds?”

“It’s nothing that I’ve ever seen before. At first it looked like maybe a big cat got him, but when I cleaned him up I noticed something unusual. Take a closer look at the edges of the wounds.”

The redhead did so, leaning down and taking the magnifying glass she held out. Up close, it was easy to see what she meant. Where normal claw marks would have left jagged, torn edges, there appeared to be burns radiating away from the wounds.

“That’s not cauterization,” he frowned, glancing up at her. “It looks like acid wear, almost. Did you find any trace?”

“Already sent it up to Timmy, he said he’d run it priority for me.”

“Good. Valera is already running DNA, we should have an ID for him soon.”

He turned to head back to the labs, but stopped when Alexx called out to him.

“Horatio, did I hear right? The kids you found in the house said he was protecting them?”

“Yes,” he nodded, turning to look over his shoulder at her. “They said he showed up and got them into the house, told them to stay inside and call 911 if he didn’t come back within an hour. They heard what one of them said was like the T-Rex from Jurassic Park, and someone yelling in a language none of them knew. When he didn’t come back, they called us.”

“Did you find anyone else out there?”

“No, but there were signs of a struggle and a lot of blood that wasn’t his. We’re running that too,” he promised. “We’ll catch whoever did this to him.”

Alexx nodded as he left, smiling sadly down at the young man.

“You did good, baby, protecting those kids. You can rest easy now, you’re safe here.”

Unseen, Xander smiled over at her, pain free for the first time in three years.

“Come on man,” Jesse ordered, nudging him in the side to get his attention. “We’ve got a chaos sorcerer to annoy.”

“Right,” Xander nodded, grinning madly at his best friend. “Now, where did you say the IAB office was?”
