Senses and Jell-O
A/N: Sorry it has been such a long time since I’ve updated. I’ve had writer’s block and have been busy. This post is also in celebration to my 100,000th hit on TtH! Thank you to everyone who made this possible!
After everyone cleaned up, changed, and got a bit of rest, the ones who had been on the planet gathered in the briefing room to discuss what happened. They all told their side of the story, no fights broke out, and everything went smoothly; that is until afterwards.
General Hammond asked Buffy to stay behind. The rest of SG-1 stayed as well, though they didn’t know why. It was like they felt they needed too.
“Buffy, would mind explaining in more detail the feeling you had about the Goa’uld?”
Buffy figured this would happen, yet she still didn’t want to talk about it. Every time she thought about it, she would get worked up. She stood up and started pacing in the room. “It was like I got this dark feeling. All it screamed at me was that the Goa’uld in front of me was evil and needed to be destroyed. I can’t really explain it. I think the Powers That Be are messing around with my powers. In some ways, it helps me, like when it tells me if someone is the bad guy or the good guy if they are Jaffa, Tok’ra, sometimes even humans. When it comes to the Goa’uld, there is no ounce of good in them. They are pure evil. The urge to kill them is so strong; I can barely fight to keep it controlled enough for someone to get answers out of them.”
At that moment, she felt a magical tingling on her skin, turning around to face the intruder in an instant. She was filled with annoyance and relief in that moment; annoyance at who it was and relief that she might get some kind of answer.
A Brooklyn accent that she had grown to know since she was called filled the room. “Slayer.”
“Whistler; I was wondering when you show up.” She relaxed her stance some, but not enough to keep the balance demon comfortable with the thought there wouldn’t be much violence.
“I came to give you a message from the Powers. You’re right that the sensation you get is from them changing your senses; they’re having them adapt to what you’re fighting against now. Trust me, Slayer. It will only get worse in the future. Those senses are the key to getting you through to the other side of the fight alive.”
Buffy sighed and started pacing again. “Does the urge have to be so strong though?”
Whistler sighed. “Sorry, but I can’t tell you that. You’ll find out when you’re meant to. Hesitation could lead to your death and the deaths of many others when you’re dealing with this kind of enemy.”
With that there was another tingle across her skin and he was gone just as quickly as he appeared. She growled in frustration. After a minute of silence, there was only one person brave enough to break the tension.
“Does he always do that?” Jack, of course, was that one.
Buffy laughed without humor once. “Do what? Zap in randomly, or leave cryptic warnings and messages? He’s a big fan of doing both.” Buffy was still pacing, though after that, she stopped and went back to sit down, but she couldn’t stay still.
General Hammond sighed. “Alright, dismissed.” He stood up and walked into his connecting office. He might decide today is one of the days he drinks a bit of the alcohol from the hidden bottle in his desk drawer.
Buffy had plans to go right to the on base gym. She had to work off some of the tension and energy. Teal’c headed off to go converse with his mentor. Daniel and Sam headed to their respective work areas to go through translations or to do scientific calculations. Jack had plans to go to the mess hall. He really wanted pie.
An hour later, Buffy was covered in sweat, and the mountain had to replace a punching bag. The one she had punched and kicked literally had stuffing come out of the sides in multiple spots. She went to take a shower and change before heading to the mess hall. After she worked out so long, she needed to refuel her body. At the door, she saw a certain Colonel sitting at the table with a bowl of blue Jell-O in front of him nearly gone. She chuckled slightly; he really was a kid inside. She started to head over to the line, but before she could get there, she felt a tap on her shoulder.
She didn’t even need to turn around, though she did. “Colonel O’Neill.”
Jack sighed and rolled his eyes. “It’s Jack. We’re teammates.”
Buffy rolled her eyes in return. “Fine, Jack.”
She turned and finished walking to the line, with her commanding officer following her. They each grabbed a tray. Buffy raised an eyebrow.
She rolled her eyes. “I guess you didn’t get enough Jell-O earlier?”
He chuckled. “You can never have enough Jell-O, or pie. Or cake, either.”
She laughed and started filling up her tray with food. “So, have you been here since the debriefing?”
“Yep, and I’ve had a few yummy desserts since then. What about you?” He answered as he started putting things on his tray too.
“I’ve been at the gym. It seems like the punching bags aren’t that sturdy.”
It was Jack’s turn to raise an eyebrow. “Oh?”
“Yeah. It looks like the mountain is going to have to replace one of the bags. It had stuffing coming out by the end.”
Jack shook his head in amusement. “I don’t doubt it.”
They were at the end of the line by now. Buffy’s plate was filled up, and Jack only had a couple of desserts and a drink on his. They each paid and found a place to sit. Buffy knew Jack wouldn’t leave her alone, so she didn’t try. She knew he would be concerned because of what happened on the planet. He knew that she was still upset about her powers changing without a heads up at least. He wanted to make sure that she had someone to talk to. They sat there and made small talk while eating. About fifteen minutes later, it became more serious.
“Are you okay, Buffy? I mean really okay.”
She looked up at him, surprised by the sudden question. “I’m fine.” He just raised an eyebrow at that, which just made her sigh. “I guess. I’m a little stressed out about the changes, but that’s it.”
He nodded his head, accepting her answer. The conversation turned lighter again and a few minutes after, they had another two people sit down beside them with trays of their own. Buffy looked up to see Carter and Daniel. Carter sat next to Jack and Daniel sat next to Buffy. They both smiled at each other.
“Hey,” greeted Daniel.
“Hey,” replied Buffy.
“So, um, what did you do after the briefing?” asked Daniel.
Buffy blushed. “I kind of accidentally broke one of the punching bags in the gym. The stuffing was coming out of it when I got done.”
Daniel chuckled a little while looking a little amazed. “Wow. That definitely tops what I was doing.”
“What were you doing?”
“I was just translating something that one of the SG teams brought back.”
Buffy wanted to talk about something else, besides the punching bag incident, so decided to ask him about the translation. “What did it say?”
Daniel looked at her incredulously. “You really want to know?” She nodded; he smiled. “Okay. Um, it described the major events in history that affected the planet, like floods and droughts, and its people, like the oppression by the Goa’uld.”
She was truly interested in what he was saying now. “Really?” He nodded. “How far back does it go?”
“I’ve gotten it back about a few hundred years so far. There’s much more to translate though.” He couldn’t wait to get back to it, but his stomach had started protesting before he left his office. He had gone to see if Sam wanted to go eat too. He was genuinely happy that Buffy was here too
Buffy bit her bottom lip. “Do you mind if I sit in there and watch you translate it?”
Daniel’s smile got even bigger. “Of course you can.” This got a large smile from Buffy.
A thud on the table garnered their attention. “Hey, both of you; eat.”
They both blushed and started to finish their trays of food. The plans they made were making them eat just a little faster than normal speed. They made small talk with Jack and Sam until they finished what they had and put their trays away before heading back to Daniel’s office.
