The end of the beginning

Xander was standing against a tall pine wood looking out in to the darkness and pondering the facts of life.

"It shouldn’t be like this you know," Xander stated.

A tall demon sitting by the camp fire look out to the human, "What do you mean?" she asked.

Xander looked back, "When the first evil died, we expected the fighting to lessen and it did just before it all when to hell," he said.

The demon smiled grimly, "Not for us. When you killed the First the vultures started to fight to become the next ruler of hell." The demons growled a bit and tossed a bit of wood into the fire.

Xander nodded, "On earth we had ‘the quite years’, almost no vampire and demon activity."

"I do remember," the demon said. "In the hell dimension the fighting was excuse the pun hellish. Demon army’s and hellgods were tearing each other apart backstabbing and murdering." The demon looked up at the fire pondering her past life, "it’s no wonder that we lost when the powers got involved."

Xander looked curios, "I have wondered about that and what had happened."

The demon looked up again, "They managed to kill the strongest of the hellgods and then one of us panicked."

Xander asked, "So it was your side that did it?"

"I’m not sure. Suddenly we demons had the ability to choose between good and evil and grow old and die, just like you humans." The demons cast a bitter look at Xander, "Don’t take me wrong most of us are angry, hateful and have an urge to fight, but now more and more of us try to live in peace and some are becoming crazy."

Xander smiled, "You are thinking about the opening of the hellmouths?" He asked.

The demon smiled, "Yeah, I am. It is not that bad. Many demons are now more interested in ruling than destroying, besides even the powers let us be now."

Xander closed his only eye, "But our civilization is destroyed. The civil wars, the army of crazy demons and human nuclear attack destroy us."

The demon smiled bitterly, "It did that, but civilization is restarting itself. Humans are fighting back, some side by side with my kind and some of the hell dimensions are used to grow food in now days."

Xander nodded, "Maybe, but it will probably be generations before humans can walk safely on the earth again and probably soon most of us will be half demons anyway," he said as he sat down by the demons side.

The demon looked with sadness at her friend, "At least you are not my slave and I know humans will survive and prosper eventually," she said.

Xander nodded, resting his head on her shoulder, "I know, I know Lilith, I know," he said to the demon.

As they sat down together, they wondered where they should go and what they would do.
