“So you're sure she's not a demon?” Buffy wanted to know.
“Quite sure. Just a precocious child with a great love for the environment, etc. Something like that Irwin child,” Giles added.
“Okay. That doesn't reassure me, 'cause I've always had my opinions about that girl.”
Giles sighed. “The Irwin child is fully human. Just... precocious. Of course, this one has more than ordinarily precocious. She is also, by all reports, a very strong shaman. It runs in her family.”
“Ah. Shaman. Now that makes sense,” Xander decided as he relaxed back into his seat.
“It does?” Buffy asked, puzzled.
“Yeah. Well, she has a talking backpack, a map that sings, and only speaks to animals and family members. 'Cause that happens to normal, non-witchy-type people.”
“See, now that's why I was thinking demon,” Buffy countered.
“She's helping the environment. Ergo, she's some kind of Earth-magicy-type person.”
Buffy snorted. “Xander said 'ergo'.”
“I did not!”
“You did, sweety,” Willow sighed.
Xander scowled at Giles. “This is all your fault. You are entirely to blame for this. First with the seven year old shamans, and now with the 'ergos'. Next you'll be sizing me for tweed. I won't do it, I tell you!”
“Believe me, Xander, I would never do that,” Giles reassured him.
“Really, Giles,” the young man asked, perking up.
“Quite. The Queen herself would revoke my citizenship if ever I tried, and I would be forbidden to drink tea.”
Xander blinked. And again. He leaned over to his red-haired friend, and whispered, “He's making fun of me, isn't he?”
She patted his knee. “Yes, Xander, he is.”
