Kidnapping and a Movie

May 13, 2005 10:06 PM

Buffy surveyed her room with a grin. It was like a normal movie night, but more sugary and snack-y goodness. She also had an array of movies that she and Willow were going to sit down and watch. Her hair was pulled back and her jammies were on. There were blankets spread out on the floor and ready for burrowing. The only thing missing was Willow.

She knew if she outright asked, Willow would make excuses. So, she had a back up plan.

There was a knock on the door and she slowly crept over and opened it a crack. Tabitha, one of the slayers first picked up when the Council was formed, was ready and waiting for instructions. She had been an actress in film theater and was more than happy to put her talents to good use.

"I'm ready. Just make it convincing, but not so convincing that she rounds up the cavalry."

The slayer nodded and took off, heading to Willow's rooms. Once there, she took a few quick, deep breaths and rubbed her cheeks to bring on a flush before bursting through the door.

"Willow! Buffy needs your help! She said it's urgent!" she panted. "You've got to help her."

Willow grabbed her robe. "What's wrong?"

She was tugging her robe on as she walked briskly. She had not sensed Buffy's mood. If there was danger, it usually invaded her senses. She hurried to her best friend's room and flung open the door, ready to assist.

She saw bedding and snacks.

"Buffy?"

She had been waiting behind the door and slammed it shut. "First, nothing's wrong, except you're avoiding me and I don't like you being avoid-y. So here we are, in my room, about to have a movie night whether you want to or not."

Willow's mouth was open in shock.

"What? I haven't... I mean... Buffy, I'm not really-"

"No."

Willow made a face. "I'm not feeling very social. I'm sorry."

She moved for the door, but Buffy blocked her path.

"Buffy."

"You're not the only one with a resolve face. Sit or I will sit on you." She pointed to the bedding on the floor to make her point."

Willow shuffled over warily. She had little doubt that Buffy would actually sit on her and force her to stay.

Buffy sat down across from her and started munching on popcorn. "So, you have two choices, and remember that I'm quicker than you and can beat you to the door. We can watch movies and you will pick which as long as it's not depressing, or we can have a girly chat about girls, boys, and we can paint each others' nails as long as they are not red because I plan on wearing pink and don't want to clash."

"I don't want to pick the movie," Willow replied sullenly. "You pick."

She noticed her favorite snacks were here. There was also a bottle of this dark purple polish she'd been eyeballing months ago but had never bought. Buffy must have went back for it.

"Well how about a happy movie? Someone confiscated 'Meet the Fockers' from one of the younger slayers." Buffy started to go through the movie stack. "There's also the cartoons that came out last year--The Incredibles, that other Shrek movie. Ooh look." She held up the DVD of Mean Girls. "It's the story of our high school without the undead."

Willow gestured to Mean Girls.

"So who are we talking about?" she asked. "Theo Nott?"

Buffy snorted as she loaded the movie. "Please. He's so not my type. Besides, if he does end up working here, I'm putting him under the category of watcher, as in 'I don't date Watchers'. What about you? Did you think Mr. Nott was gooey goodness?"

"Kinda gay here, but yeah, he was handsome, I guess. If you like big blue eyes and a mischievous grin. So if you don't date watchers, who will you be dating?

"No one, but that's kind of the point. If I already have a rule that I don't date Watchers, they don't try, and I don't have to smack them into a wall for being inappropriate." Buffy shrugged. "I don't want any slayer to have an advantage or entitlement over another one because I'm dating their watcher. And considering I don't really get to go partying out every night, I'm content to stay here and help my girls."

"You traded cats for slayers. Since he would not be a watcher and might not work here anyhow, you might go out with Theo Nott once after the way he stared at you. Don't tell me you didn't notice."

She had noticed, but was unsure on how things would work out considering his animosity towards Draco. "Like he wanted to eat me alive? I saw. Maybe if he swings by here again I'll feel things out."

"Buffy, if you think you might like him, don't let Draco influence you. You need to talk to Tori. She can explain things. They don't really dislike one another, they just don't trust each other. Blaise always talks about how he doesn't like Astoria, but he carried her here after her vision when she was passed out. I guarantee if there was a real threat, they'd band together."

Buffy gave her a look. "The only reason I'm worried is because I don't want it to come down to a slayer, say Pevensie, being hurt and someone hesitating to heal her because of me. I'm not saying it would happen, but I'd rather not risk it."

The movie was finally starting and Buffy paused it. "Besides, it's kind of like trying to find a guy who wouldn't mind becoming attached to a woman who already has kids. All these slayers? Pretty hard approval system."

"He doesn't strike me as being afraid of much," Willow grabbed a bag of chips and started munching. "Speaking of Pevensie, have you noticed that Draco's being a little harder on her these days?"

She nodded. "Giles and I talked about it. I've been going too easy on the slayers." Buffy looked down and started to pick through the snack mix for certain shapes of snacks. "I thought that they didn't have to work as hard as I did since there were so many slayers now, but I was just hindering them. I'm reluctant to send hardly any of the slayers out, and the only reason Pevensie gets to go is because Draco can use magic, otherwise I'd put my foot down until she was 16 like the other girls. So, yeah, he's working her hard. All the watchers are. Their training sessions are going to get tougher too."

"You don't think he's maybe being a little too hard? You know how he cares about her, and he gets funny when he cares about people."

She set the chips down and grabbed the bowl of popcorn.

"He wants her to be better than everyone else's slayer. He's so competitive. He's also got her throwing knives now."

"I'll drop in just to make sure, but it's not who has the better slayer. It's who can keep their slayer alive." Buffy sighed. "When did I get so cynical and mope-y? I used to be fun. Do you remember fun me?"

"Which is why you should go out on a date."

"Because all my dates have such an excellent track record." Buffy tossed some snacks in her mouth. "So what's going on with you? Anything of interest to report? This can't be the Buffy show. I need me some Willow too."

"I've been working with the coven. Pretty much that's all. Well, other than the fact that Astoria saw who was making the marks burn. Giles is on it, though, so don't worry."

She was surprised. That was a big deal. "Wow. So you're officially off the hook. Was it one of those Death Feeder guys?"

Willow winced. "Um... no. It's Ethan Rayne."

In her surprise, Buffy inhaled the snacks she was chewing and had to cough to dislodge it. Willow started hitting her back to help it along. After getting a quick drink, she stared in surprise at Willow. "Ethan? Ethan Rayne? Band candy and bewitched costumes and turning Giles into a demon Ethan Rayne?"

"Apparently he escaped from the government facility he was being kept in a while back. Giles seemed pretty mad, but now everyone knows I didn't do it."

Buffy was equally parts mad that Ethan did something to get Willow in trouble and equally mad that he was back in their lives screwing stuff up again. "Great. Can I go beat him with his own legs now?"

"I think Giles wants that privilege. Besides, it seems sort of small for Ethan. I'm wondering what the bigger picture is. Giles is too. We don't know what he's really after, and I think Giles wants to know that first."

While Buffy was still pissed that she'd been tattooed, an experience she was not happy with, especially with the expense of the removal process, being turned into a demon and stabbed by your own slayer did win out. She would focus on it later. Thinking of revenge was not on the order for tonight.

"I guess I can live with leftovers. Now, happier thoughts. How are things going at the coven, and tell me stuff. I may not understand it, but I can listen and nod at appropriate intervals."

"I don't know. Irulan is tough. Andromeda pushes me to be better. They're growing. With the dark mark stuff, people are getting paranoid. You could... come visit if you like. Andromeda already told me you'd been to see her."

Willow raised a brow.

Buffy grinned shamelessly. "That was fun. Giles' lady can cook a mean stew, and her grandkid can change his looks at will. I would have killed to have that ability when I was younger. Hell, I'd love to have it now. But yeah, I think I'd like to come visit."

"You can meet Mac's Nana and Neville's Gran. Nessa and Augusta are amazing women. You can so see where Mac gets her personality, and Irulan's cottage is really nice. Sometimes her husband Paul sits in."

Willow had been so involved in every aspect of Buffy's life for so long that she thought it only fair she return the favor. "Sounds like a plan. When are you next going?"

"Probably in a few days. Just, um, don't hit anybody if they make you mad. We don't always agree about stuff."

"I can control my temper," she said defensively, and rolled her eyes at Willow's look. "I can. I'll be on my best behavior. Promise."

"Good."
