Job Interviews

April 14, 2005 11:42 Am

Oz had met Lyra and Rowan in the Leaky. He came here a lot and was getting to be friends with Tom. Oz like the barkeep. Tom was a nice man. Funny too. He had lots of stories. Rowan was looking irritated as he and his mother approached.

"Hey, Lyra," Oz said, giving the older woman a hug.

"Oz. It's so good to see you again. Rowan got a letter from Jordy. He seems to be doing well now that he's back with your aunt and uncle. I spoke with Maureen on the fellytone, and she mentioned perhaps letting Jordy visit this summer. If that's all right with you."

"Yeah," Oz said. "That'd be great. I'll have to talk to Uncle Ken about it."

"We really appreciate your helping find Rowan work."

"I can speak for myself, Mum." Rowan seemed to struggle internally. "Thanks, Oz."

Oz grinned. Rowan was tall and thin with longish hair and dark brown eyes. He dressed a lot like Oz - layers, most of them cotton. There was a chain connecting his wallet to one of his beltloops.

"Come on. Neville is expecting us," Oz said.

They made their way to Neville's shop in Diagon. When they entered, Oz didn't see anyone.

"Hey, Neville? It's Oz. I have Lyra and Rowan Blackwood here. You around?"

Pevensie stepped out. "Hey, Oz. he's in the back. He'll be up soon."

She looked at the boy standing there and blinked several times. He was really cute.

"Pevensie, this is Lyra Blackwood and her son Rowan. Row might work here if Neville hires him. Lyra, Rowan, this is Pevensie Karlsen. She's a vampire slayer."

"Really?" Rowan said. "You're so delicate-looking."

Pevensie laughed. "Give me a short staff. I'll show you how delicate I am."

Rowan grinned at her. Lyra looked pleased. Oz knew why. Lyra had mentioned before that Rowan had issues making friends because of his lycahtropy.

Neville stepped from the back.

"There he is," Oz said. "Hey, Neville."

Neville was wiping the dirt from his hands on a towel. "'Lo, Oz." He held out his hand to the woman standing beside him. "Neville Longbottom."

"Lyra Blackwood. This is my son Rowan."

Oz chuckled. Could he be any more unenthused?

"So Oz said I have to earn this job. What would I have to do? I was all right at Herbology in school, and I can lift stuff."

"How much?" Pevensie asked.

"I don't know."

Neville rolled his eyes at Pevensie. "Don't you have dirt to move? I can handle this."

He turned back to Rowan and looked him over. "I'll let you work with the plants after I'm sure you're knowledgable. I'm not putting down Sprout at all, but some of these plants are dangerous and I don't want you getting hurt. I'll let you work with some of the customers, and perhaps do some lifting."

"I'm not good with people."

Oz elbowed him.

"But I am willing to learn."

"That's all I want--a willingness. If you want, this can be fun. Pevensie sure enjoys it, and she only started out because she was bored." Neville went over to the window and took out the 'Help Wanted' sign. "If your mum is okay with it, you can even do some deliveries for me. I do business with a lot of apothecaries."

Lyra was beaming as she tucked some of her ash blonde hair behind her ear.

"I think that's a yes," Oz said.

Rowen grinned.

"Now, for legality sake, I need you and your mum to fill out some paperwork and we can work out your hours after that's in. Pevensie can help you out back in the beginning."

"Of course," Lyra replied.

Oz noticed Pevensie watching them, but she ducked back around the corner.

Neville fetched the paperwork for them and led them to the nearest greenhouse that had some seats in it. "It shouldn't take you long. Any idea of the hours you'd like?"

"He's not doing anything but getting into trouble, so he can work what you need."

Oz chuckled.

Neville grinned. "For now you can work Pevensie's hours so you'll have someone to help you. After that, you can work alternative hours. Does that sound decent enough?"
