“Ok, but here’s what I don’t get,” Xander said, eying his source warily. “From what you’re telling me, it sounds like this apocalypse is pretty much under control already. The Powers are already mobilizing their forces to deal with it. So why do we need to get involved?”
The other man- if that was the right word, which Xander suspected it wasn’t- gave him a smile that told Xander there was more to this than he’d let on yet.
“Look, we’d just prefer to have a little extra insurance on this one, ok? An ace in the hole so to speak.”
“Sure, it’s just that this ace would like to know just how deep the hole is first,” Xander replied.
“Look, you know I don’t like holding out on you, but I’m not supposed to spread it around.”
Xander shook his head.
“If you want us involved, you better spill.”
His contact sighed.
“All right. The Big Guy’s missing, ok? This isn’t an official assignment, this is me. And it’s not like I’m asking you to take this out of the kindness of your heart. There’s something in it for your organization too.”
“You’d better be right about this, Rufus.”
