"I'll be seeing you, Carter."
Jack stared after Jo, a terrible sinking feeling in his stomach. It had been a rollercoaster of a day already between the Secret Service incident, the black holes, the impending Astraeus launch, and Allison finally
agreeing to move in with him, but that? He was pretty sure the tracks had just dropped out from under him.
It was stupid, really. He had no reason to think that would be the last time he'd ever lay eyes on her. He'd grown closer to Jo in the last couple of years than he'd ever been to his actual sister; he'd meant it when he said he counted Jo as part of his family, and he believed she
meant it when she said she felt the same way. But-- he'd been half expecting something to go catastrophically wrong all day, and after flirting with presidential assassination, gamma rays cooking Eureka, and the rejection he'd been half-fearing ever since he'd opened his mouth to ask Allison to stay with him... Jo's little farewell speech sounded an awful lot like a couple of other permanent goodbyes in recent memory."I'll be seeing you, Sport.""I'll see you around, Jack."
He swallowed, trying to reassure himself. Jo had
to at least return in six months. Zane would be back from Titan then, and whatever ultimate decision she made, she'd have to at least fill him in on it. Otherwise, her sort of boyfriend would probably hack the globe looking for her, and either get his ass arrested again or turn up on her doorstep; she had to know that.
Right. So whatever disaster was due to strike-- the way it always seemed to, when a really big project was on the line-- it couldn't have anything to do with Jo. She was going to be fine. She would
; if there was one thing his partner was good at, it was protecting herself... and others.
And she wasn't sacrificing herself to save the world. She wasn't trying to disappear for her own protection. She wasn't gadding off to a foreign country with his baby nephews and her fiancé like Lexi. She was just... doing what Zoe was doing: stepping out of her comfort zone to strengthen herself. She'd be back. Right?
Jack shook his head, then swallowed down his sense of foreboding and headed for his backup vehicle to return to G.D.
