Dr. Maggie Walsh did her best to hide her nervousness as her guest made her way down to where she was standing. It had been years since she had last seen her former teacher, Dr. Elizabeth Renfro, and Maggie wanted to believe that she had exceeded the other woman’s expectations of her. What Maggie was doing here in Sunnydale was revolutionary, to say the least, but she didn’t know how Dr. Renfro would see it. Her mentor, and--dare she mention it--idol, always seemed to revert her back to how she used to behave as a doctoral candidate, and not the head of the Sunnydale Installation.
“Maggie,” the other woman greeted her, taking her hand and giving Maggie a kiss on the cheek. “How good to see you again. You said that you had something that might interest me?” Maggie nodded, and gestured for Dr. Renfro to follow her. She had forgotten how straightforward Dr. Renfro was when science was at hand.
“This way, Doctor,” Maggie said, leading the way to her personal laboratory. They passed by several men on their way, some of them stopping to stare at the strange woman accompanying Dr. Walsh.
“You don’t get strangers down here too often, I take it,” Dr. Renfro observed dryly as they stopped in front of the first of several secure doors.
“You could say that,” Maggie answered, quickly entering her passcode before leaning in to get her retina scanned. “What I wanted to show you is in here.” They walked into the darkened room, Maggie leading the way to a refrigerator. Pulling it open, she took the two samples of blood at the front and handed it to the other woman.
“Blood?” Dr. Renfro asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Not just any blood,” Maggie answered, trying to keep the glee out of her voice. It wasn’t often you surprised the person who had taught you almost everything you knew. “Blood contains an element that can allows it to hold elements of foreign DNA, while retaining essential human characteristics. It’s the DNA Manticore’s been looking for.”
“Where did you get this?” Dr. Renfro asked, doing her best not to sound impressed, but letting a slight inflection of awe creep into her voice. “And how can you be sure?”
“There are certain individuals--two of which are in Sunnydale right now--whose DNA allows them to acquire superhuman abilities through a process that I have yet to determine,” Maggie answered matter of factly. “I have been able to successfully get samples from both of them, although one was easier to get than the other, and there should be enough for you to take back to Manticore and experiment with.” Dr. Renfro didn’t answer for a moment, and Maggie wondered for a brief moment if the Slayer’s blood wasn’t what they were looking for at Manticore, that if she had called Elizabeth Renfro out to California for nothing. But these fears left her the moment Dr. Renfro looked up at her and gave her a small smile.
“Very nice work, Dr. Walsh,” she said, going over to a nearby table where a refrigerated box sat. She opened up and carefully placed the two vials next to the other samples Maggie had collected. “If, after you finish here in Sunnydale, you want a change in location, Manticore would be pleased to have you.”
Maggie tried her best not to let how happy she was show through. This was the first time that Dr. Renfro had addressed her by her professional title, instead of just “Maggie.”
“I have some time yet before I’m done here, but I’ll consider it,” Maggie answered as calmly as she could. “Of course, that’s if my project doesn’t get results before yours,” she added, unable to resist a little intellectual rivalry.
“We’ll see,” Dr. Renfro answered, walking to the door. “Do you need to accompany me, or can I show myself out?”
“One of the officers will escort you back to your car,” Maggie answered. She and Dr. Renfro gave their good-byes, and she watched the older woman walk out the door back to her own sphere in Wyomming. Maggie continued to bask in her mentor’s praise for a few moments longer before reminding herself that there was still plenty of work here that needed her attention. She needed to monitor Buffy Summers’ training with Riley and his men, as well as continue to work on Adam. She smiled softly at this. Her boy certainly wouldn’t be built on his own.
