Timeline: Pre-series for 'Chuck'; between seasons 2 & 3 for 'BTVS'
This is for BuffyCharmed. I know it's not centered around your pictures, but I thought I should dedicate my first 'Chuck' fic to you anyway. Hope you like it!
His best friend got him kicked out of college. His best friend stole his girlfriend. His best friend was going to steal his life; his dreams. His best friend was living it up in Stanford. Chuck Bartowski sat at a bar, nursing a beer. It wasn't his usual style, but given the fact that he had to go home and explain to his sister that he was expelled for cheating
, he thought he had an excuse. The woman next to him, a pretty redhead, listened attentively as he poured out his life story.
"You know," she told him, "I don't usually bother with men. They tend to deserve whatever they get. Are you sure you're not a woman?"
Chuck blinked at her slowly. It took a few seconds for her words to compute in his brain. "Pretty sure. I mean, I'm missing some pretty important woman parts, and I've got definitely man-type parts."
"Lacking boobs wouldn't disqualify you from womanhood. My Xander's friend Buffy had no boobs, but she was still a woman. Of course, you can't be a woman if you have a-"
"Yes, thank you. I think we've established that I'm a guy."
"Unless you're a hermaphrodite. You could have both."
"I promise, I don't."
"I suppose I can make an exception anyway," she offered. "Wouldn't you like to see your friend pay?"
"Excuse me?" Chuck asked.
"He got you kicked out, stole your girlfriend, and then blamed it all on you. Doesn't that upset you?"
"Yeah, it does. You know, I wish..."
"Wish what?" she asked, leaning closer in anticipation.
"I don't know. I wish that someday, just once, a woman would choose me over him."
"That's it?" she demanded. "No syphilis, or boils, or even exploding his p-"
"Why would I want that?"
"Well, he hurt you."
"Yeah, and he's got to live with that."
Anya's shoulders slumped. "This is why I stick with women. They're so creative with their vengeance."
"Excuse me?" Chuck asked.
"I can't take care of it right now, but if I ever get my powers back your wish will be granted, even if it is lame."
Chuck paid for his drink and left, promising himself that he would stay away from bars and their crazy patrons.
Five years later, Chuck discovered that Bryce Larkin got him expelled to protect him. The fact that he was dead made it easier to forgive him. Chuck never heard the whispered "Wish granted," as Sarah's lips pressed against him right as the timer reached zero. He would never know how close Sarah came to leaving with Bryce, or how his afternoon in a bar with an underage redhead changed the lives of everyone close to him.
