31 Nights of Frights, Fifth Edition

5. Dirty Fingernails

It started out simple, the need for more power. It grew like a festering wound in need of treating: rapid and steadily worse. If one went down Knockturn Alley, one could conceivably find a man who knew how to get it. More magic. He had one name, and no one was certain that it truly was his real name. Real names had power after all, and a magic broker didn’t need a way to be stripped of his magic or make any weakness in his armor well known.

His clientele never seemed to mind his need for secrecy. Not when they were damn secretive themselves. Take his current customer.

“I’m not saying it’s the best route to go, little man,” the Magic broker known as Rack. “Immortality’s a bitch sometimes.”

“But it can be done?” the teenager leaned forward, his eyes shrewd as he searched the broker’s face.

“It’s a steep cost,” Rack frowned.

“I can pay,” the boy shrugged.

And it was in that moment that Rack knew his stay in Knockturn Alley had grown too long when teenagers started creeping him out. The Hellmouth was rumored to be good feeding ground for his kind. Anything to get him out of his stall in London and a boy named Tom Riddle who was looking into Horcruxes.
