A/N I added this chapter on to the original. I'm not one hundred percent sure about it, but I do like the concept. For those who review, please let me know if you think it adds to the story or if I should have quit one chapter back. As always, I have no proprietary claim on BTVS. Thanks
He was just finishing up packing the linens when a voice broke into the quiet. “You know you cost me a lot of money there young Alexander.”
Xander stiffened but didn’t turn around. He didn’t need to; he recognized the voice easily enough. “How did I do that D’Hoffryn?”
“You refused the makeup sex; I had a large amount wagered on you giving in.”
“Sorry to disappoint, but that was a sucker’s bet. After everyone and everything she’s slept with in the past ten years; I was feeling sorry for her but that was something I wasn’t gonna risk.”
“Understandable,” the demon lord said. “Other than that, though; it was a magnificent performance. So compassionate, so caring, every inch the forgiving friend,” the sarcasm was palpable.
“Well I was planning on this great rant about how much she had hurt everyone she’d ever known, but when she got here I could see that she was doing a better job of beating herself up than I ever could. So I just gave her what she had earned; an easy death, and Joy and I have her out of our lives and everyone wins.”
“And speaking of your daughter, conspiring with her, a masterful stroke.”
“Hey, all I did was ask her to take it easy on Buffy, that’s it.”
“Really,” D’Hoffryn said with a smirk.
“Yes, really,” Xander replied.
“So what is next for you, young Alexander?”
“Back into the folds of the Council, making sure Joy gets properly trained, living, you get the idea.”
“Indeed, and your red haired friend; how long do you suppose she’ll hold back?”
“I dunno; that’s entirely up to Wills.”
There was silence for a while as Xander methodically continued packing, he knew that D’Hoffryn had more to say, but Xander wasn’t about to push it.
“I must confess that I’m also surprised that after being with Anyanka for so long, that you would not seek a bloodier vengeance than what you did.”
“Hey,” Xander said, finally turning around. “A fast growing tumor exactly where Joyce’s was, is exactly what I wanted. That way it looks like genetics and no one even looks to see if it might be mystical in origin.”
“You knew that the slayer essence would conceal matters until it was too late, didn’t you.”
Xander just smiled, not even bothering to answer. He walked past D’Hoffryn but paused at the doorway and turned. “If you wanna see bloody vengeance, then just keep an eye on all the guys she slept with while we were married. But that won’t be through a wish, it’ll be more of a hands on thing if you know what I mean.”
“I do,” D’Hoffryn said with a feral smile. “However, I do have one last question for you, young Alexander.” He paused, seemingly afraid to continue, but finally asked his question. “What if your daughter should ever find out that it was you who wished for her mother to die?”
Xander coldly eyed the demon lord, not liking the threat that was hanging in the air one bit, then he sighed and with a grim look asked D’Hoffryn; “Whose idea do you think it was?”
With no further words, the demon lord vanished and Xander returned to his packing.
