Willow belongs to Joss and Rube belongs to MGM I believe but to me.
Willow tapped the scythe weapon that she had taken from one of the more wild kids against her leg as the old woman started doling out candy. The kids suddenly seemed even more monster like and lunged at the old woman. Willow moved forward to help the lady but suddenly found herself lacking in the oxygen department. The redhead fell to the ground, her air deprived brain making her see the kids she had been watching turn into real demons.
Willow opened her eyes and heard several screams looking around she saw that all of her kids appeared to have run off. As she climbed to her feet she saw an older like man wander over toward her. “Don’t worry too much, it’s always a bit off balancing the first time.”
“First time?” Willow questioned curiously her eyes darting down to her ghost clad form glad that the sheet was hiding the fact that there was a conscious and unconscious version of her.
“Yeah, the first time that you die.” The man returned to her nodding toward her body. “Come on now though, there are still other things that we have to do tonight.” The man returned to her and ushered her to follow after him like it was the most normal thing in the world to lead a dead girl around in the middle of the night.
Learning that she lived on a hellmouth had given the redhead some reason to be cautious of strangers wanting her to follow them though.”Uh huh, and you are?” Willow questioned him.
“Sorry forgot to introduce myself to the new rookie.” The man said turning back to face her. “My name is Rube, and welcome to the wonderful life of being one of us kid. Normally I would give you a chance to get used to things but there is just too much going on tonight to give you a chance to get used to everything. So you’ll have to learn as you go along tonight.” The man then turned back around and headed out. “And to think tonight was supposed to be a slow night for both us and the Slayer.”
“And what are you, um we?” Willow questioned the man as she kept a wary distance from him as she followed after him. Her inquisitive nature getting the better of her, as she followed after him.
“We’re Grim Reapers kid, and it’s our job to make sure that the souls of certain people get to where they need to go.” Rube returned to her. “There are some people that are a bit stubborn and will keep fighting despite the fact that their time is up. Your Slayer friend is one of those. She managed to hang around long enough for your other friend to manage to bring air back into her lungs. According to the rumors she actually knocked her Reaper on his ass and jumped back into her body and somehow came back. The higher ups have been waiting for her to make a mistake since then so that they can try again.”
“Uh huh, and what’s that got to do with me?” Willow asked trying to sound brave despite the fact that this man seemed to think that because she was here she was now his to command. “Are you going to do the whole a life for a life thing? Cause I can tell you now that Buffy will just kick your ass all over the place as well.”
“Nope the Slayer really isn’t one of my problems. Trust me this ain’t going to be fun Red, but it’s a job that’s got to be done just as much as the job of that Slayer has to do.” Rube told her earnestly. “Only thing is, we slip in and out of the shadows that the Slayer doesn’t notice. Now come on we got a couple of reaps to get to and all of your questions are going to make us late.”
“And what if I don’t want to do this?” Willow asked him defiantly crossing her arms and giving him her most powerful resolve face. “What if I decide to go and find Buffy or Giles and get them to fix this mess?”
“Face it kid; despite everything that you and the Slayer have done you’re fucked.” Rube told her bluntly as they approached a group of demon kids chasing after some regular kids. “Now it’s time I showed you the ropes and just what it means to be a Grim Reaper. Now hurry up the sooner we get this done the sooner I can leave and train someone else. I already have a bad enough headache when I consider just what it is that Peanut is doing to my city. Now let’s go.” The return glare that the man sent to her resolve face was like Buffy’s Slayer glare mark 9.0. Not something she really wanted to have thrown at her if she could avoid it.
Willow smiled at the man as she felt a tug on her body. “Um I think this is where we part ways.” she said waving at him before she faded away from the Grim Reaper. She gasped as she felt her lungs fill up with air. She smiled as she patted her body down. She tossed the plastic weapon that had been in her hand as far as she could before she began walking down the road. She stopped though as she saw Rube looking at her shaking his head at her. “I’m alive again.” She told him weakly. “I don’t work for you, so go and steal the soul of someone else.”
“Nice try,” the Grim Reaper told her, “but it’s not that simple. It’s like I told you early Red. Your fucked and there’s nothing to do about it. The higher ups just wanted you to work with us and the Slayer.” Rube explained to her. “How better to get to the souls of those that she can’t save; than to have someone in the group as well? This way we can be ready when she dies and we can be ready for the other souls.”
Willow sighed and wondered how she was going to explain this to the others or if they would even believe her.
“Glad to see that you’re starting to accept this.” Rube said as he walked alongside of her. “I happen to have already scoped out the local coffee shop and that will be where we meet so that you can get your assignments for the day.”
“Why do I have a feeling that I’m going to end up hating you?” Will asked him curiously as she trudged along beside him.
“Because you are Red.” Rube returned with a smile. “Besides, I already told you that you’re fucked. That should have given you the understanding that you are in a really large pile of shit.” Rube then offered her a cup of hot chocolate that he had bought from a vendor. “Drink up your going to need the energy. The work of a Grim Reaper is never over yet, not in a town like Sunnydale at least. This is one of the few places in the world that has a night and day shift for its Grim Reapers.”
“I think I hate Halloween now.” Willow informed him getting a dry laugh in return as he led the newest Reaper away into the night.
