Chapter Ten
A/N: Sorry this is so short. The next part is taking a while to write, and I wanted to get this part out anyway. Sorry for the wait, real life sucks sometimes. Next chapter should be out by this weekend. Thanks to anyone who is still reading this.

"Giles, what do you think is happening with Xander?" Willow asked after everyone had left the three alone in the common room.

"I'm not entirely sure, but I have a theory. I will need to do some research to be positive."

"Wh...what is y...your theory, Mr. Giles?" Tara asked.

Giles sighed heavily. "There have been...rumors of wizards being so powerful that they could not handle the magic alone. In these instances it is said that they will bond with a wizard of similar abilities, but who is not as powerful. I believe that is what is happening to Xander and err...to Spike. Xander has spent his entire life on top of the Hellmouth, his magical core has soaked up all those energies like...well like a sponge--twenty-one years of those energies would have increased Xander's own magic immeasurably. Add in the affects of the...the Primal and I dare say it would be too great for him to handle alone."

"Why would he be bonding with Spike though?" Willow asked.

"Well, the Primal is not...not human. Sirius is an animagus, but he is still human and it is his magic that allows him to transform, nothing more. Werewolves however, change due to non-human influences and the same is true for vampires. With Spike being the nearest wizard that has a non-human influence, it is only logical that Xander's magic is bonding with his."

"Is...is Xander going to ch...change? Like a werewolf?" Tara asked, a worried expression on her face.

"I honestly don't know. He may develop animagus abilities, it seems logical that the primal would allow for a hyena form, like the dog Sirius can change into. Animagi do tend to run in families, so it is possible. We will have to wait and see. However, I do not believe he will change, like a werewolf. The primal seems to have bonded fully, it's not trying to control him like the presence of a 'were' would."

"Giles, what does this bond mean?" Willow asked, worrying her lower lip.

Giles removed his glasses and began to polish them. "From the few rumors of this happening, the bonded couple were usually or became...well...married. It's a permanent bond. If the stronger wizard does not have the bond then he or she will lose control...the magic will essentially tear the person apart. Once the bond has formed they will seek each other out, feel a need to be close to one another. The weaker wizard will be able to tap into the bond-mates power to increase their own, while siphoning off the excess of the other person's magic to help stabilize them."

"So, you're saying that Xan and Spike just basically got magically married?" Willow asked with wide eyes.

"Er...yes, more or less," Giles replied, cleaning his glasses again.

The three stared at one another for a long moment, then as one began to snicker.

"Ohhhh....Xan's gonna be pissed," Willow said between giggles.

"Yes, quite," Giles chuckled.

"Well, they have been ra..rather close since we got here," Tara said between her own giggles.

"Thank god. I thought I was the only one that noticed," Giles continued to chuckle.

"Actually, it started before we got here. They've been patrolling every night together for weeks now," Willow said, beginning to calm.

"Really? Every night? I had no idea." Giles sighed. "I have been neglecting my duties to all of you. I let my grief blind me to those who were still here. I am terribly sorry."

"It's all right Giles. We all had to deal with it in our own way. It just happened that Spike's and Xander's way of dealing was going out and killing every baddie they came across. Bonding through grief and violence, I guess there are worse things to build a marriage on," Willow said, dissolving back into giggles.

"Only with our group would that be an acceptable basis for bonding," Giles replied with a small chuckle. "I do need to do more research however. I will go to the library later to find more about what we can expect from this...." he waved his hand, "magical marriage."

"Right. You do that Giles. I'm going to stock up on chocolate and Twinkies and prepare for the "but I'm not gay! I said no more butt-monkey" that Xan is gonna start when he finds out."

"B...b...butt-monkey!" Tara squeaked.

Very Ripperish laughter erupted from Giles.

Willow turned bright red. "I...I didn't mean that! Oh Goddess!"

"It's okay sweetie," Tara patted her hand. "Who's going to tell them?"

They exchanged nervous glances. That was one conversation none of them wanted to have with their friends.

"Hey guys. What's going on?" Dawn asked bounding back into the room.
Three pairs of eyes focused on the young girl. She began to shift nervously as they each formed a feral grin. "WHAT?"

"Professor," Xander greeted as they entered the old man's office.

"Ah, Mr. Harris, Sirius, Wil...Spike. Is everything all right?" Dumbledore asked.

"Yeah, just need to know what needs to be done so that I'm made Harry's guardian."

"Actually, that should be quite simple. Since you are a wizard, you have top priority with his guardianship. And given your...experiences...I believe they will find you to be more than capable. However, how does young Mr. Potter feel about all of this?"

"They just talked about it Professor," Sirius spoke up. "Harry is thrilled. Xander is only the second person in his life to tell him he's wanted and cared for; it's not just Xander, it's all of them. Personally, I don't think there is anyone out there that could provide better protection for Harry."

"I agree. Just from what little we have seen already, and the reports in The Prophet I would have to agree with that. We will go to the Ministry tomorrow and have the paperwork filed for you Xander."

"Thank you. Harry is writing to his friends to have them come stay with him."

"Then we will have a castle full of Weasleys by dinner," Dumbledore chuckled. "Mrs. Weasley will insist on meeting Harry's new guardian, as will the rest of the clan."

"Quite," Sirius chuckled.

"Well, since we're gonna be teaching the kiddies how to fight, what say we put on a demonstration Xan?" Spike asked, his eyes twinkling.

"Huh?"

"You got that new upgrade. Gotta test it out. Sparring match for the visitors."

Xander's grin was feral as he extended his hand to Spike. "Squeeze."

Spike matched his grin and took his hand. He squeezed until he heard bone begin to rub together, and not a single twinge from the chip. He squeezed harder.

"Ow. Okay stop. Well, we know the chip doesn't work on me. But that could be from the hyena. We need to have you check it on someone else just to be sure. Maybe Giles or Wills will let you try."

Sirius extended his hand. "Go ahead. We need to know if you can protect everyone while you're inside the wards of the castle." Spike took his hand and squeezed hard. "Bloody hell!"

Without thought Spike whooped, grabbed Xander, and spun him around the room. "The chip don't work pet! I got my bite back. Not that I want to use it, but it's back!"

"I'm happy for you Spike," Xander said, laughing. "But could you put me down? Some of us are still alive and get nauseous."

Spike immediately stopped and put Xander on his feet. "Er...sorry Xan. Got a bit carried away there."

"It's all right," Xander said, putting a hand on his shoulder. "I really am happy for you. And I think a sparring match is a great idea."

"Really?" Spike asked, looking through is lashes.

"Yeah. We gotta see what I can do now. And what better way to convince people that they're kids are safe with us than by showing them what we can do. We'll do some hand to hand and some weapons. Whatcha think?"

"I think that's a bloody brilliant idea." Spike turned to Dumbledore. "Er...that is if it's okay with you Alb."

"Actually, it sounds quite delightful. I will inform the rest of the staff so that they can all watch and have you introduced to everyone. We'll use the Quidditch field so you have plenty of room."

"Coolness," Xander grinned.

"I do have a question. Why did you threaten Severus earlier?" Dumbledore asked, focusing intently on Xander.

Xander shrugged. "I got the feeling he wasn't being completely honest when he said would repeat the story I told him." Xander began to feel a tingle on his scalp.

"What made you feel he wasn't being honest?" Dumbledore narrowed his eyes slightly.

The tingling sensation increased and Spike started a low growl. Xander looked at the vampire and saw gold begin to circle his blue eyes. He turned his attention back to Dumbledore as the tingling continued to build. He let out his own growl.

"I would quit trying to get into my head if I were you."

The tingling immediately stopped and Dumbledore paled. "How?"

"I've been possessed twice and thralled by Dracula. After Will restored Tara's mind from the Glory brain-sucking, she spelled all of us to keep anyone from being able to touch our minds again. I don't like people playing around in my head!" Xander growled coldly.

{Wills!}

{Yeah Xan? What's wrong?!}

{Get the things together to put that mind shield on Harry and Sirius. Dumbledore just tried to probe my mind!}

{Seriously?! That's just rude. I'll have it ready by the time you get back.}

{Thanks Wills.}

{Oi. Red. You didn't feel him try to probe the Whelp?}

{Umm...no. Why?}

{I bloody well did! Maybe it's cuz I'm in the same room then?}

{Uhhh...yeah. Umm...that's probably it.}

{Red?}

{What? I gotta go find that spell and get things together. I'll see you guys later.}

Spike let out a low growl of frustration. "Bloody hell."

Xander looked at him questioningly. "What's wrong?"

Spike shook himself. "Nothing. We'll talk to Red later."

Xander turned his attention back to Dumbledore. "Don't ever try that on any of us again. We've told you there are things we're not ready to share. We will tell you anything we think you need to know. If we don't tell you something, it's for our safety and for the safety of everyone around us. I'm finding really hard to like you. Jumping into someone's mind really doesn't instill a feeling of trust."

Dumbledore was chagrined. "Forgive me. I should not have done that. I promise I will not do anything like that again."

"For your sake, you better not." Xander turned to Spike and Sirius. "Let's go. We've got to get ready for Harry's friends and get things together for the sparring match. We'll see you later Professor."
