Rule #12

A hiss escaped Tony as the paper cut its way across his index finger and he flinched, pulling his hand back from the manila folder and its deceptively mundane contents. His wrist shook, fingers flexing as he resisted the urge to put the wounded finger in his mouth and glared at the folder. A flash of black and green out of the corner of his eye drew his narrowed gaze up and towards the desk across from him.

Eyebrows rising as Summers made herself comfortable at Ziva’s desk and Tony noticed she’d lost the jacket she’d been wearing at the crime scene earlier in the day. The sleeveless blouse revealed toned and tanned arms and with the first few buttons undone Tony was forced to resist the urge to stare at the shadow between her breasts. Instead he kept his gaze on her downturned face and he frowned at the fact that she was scribbling across a legal pad with a sharpie for several long, silent moments.

Her face lifted, green eyes, paler when compared to the deep color of her blouse, gathered around the corners as she smiled and lifted the legal pad, presenting Tony with the simply written, ‘Hey.’

He glanced sideways, taking in Gibbs’ lowered head and engrossed stare before his own head inclined and he offered Summers a tentative, if confused, smile. She turned the page and revealed the next message, ‘I’ve been thinking.’ His mouth quirked and he opened it, but she jerked her head to the side Gibbs was on and Tony wisely swallowed his retort about her and thinking.

She smirked, turned a page and waited for him to read, ‘You’re a snappy dresser,’ his smile returned as he nodded acknowledgment of this tried and true fact about himself and his smile slipped with the next, ‘And you’re a lot smarter than you let on.’ He sat up straighter when she flipped to the next page and, ‘You should show that side of you more!

The word ‘more’ was underlined three times and his brow rose when he noticed the exclamation point was dotted with a smiley face. He turned, taking a quick inventory or the area and searching for Abby to see if she’d put Summers up to this little charade—or would this be Pictionary. His mouth dipped at the corners and Gibbs took a sip of his coffee before Tony turned back to Summers and another message, ‘But that’s beside the point.

His top teeth sunk slightly into his lower lip as he suppressed the urge to hurry her along with a hand gesture or spoken encouragement as he heard Gibbs replace his coffee cup. Summers turned the page and Tony sputtered, quickly following it with a cough at the neatly written, ‘I’m thinking of breaking rule #12.’

Gibbs shuffled papers around his desk and Tony glanced towards him before flicking his gaze back to Summers and the next page. ‘Is McGee seeing anyone?’ The question made his stomach sink in the oddest way and his brows lowered as he shook his head in the negative and Summers rolled her eyes at him. She flipped past the next two pages and held up, ‘I meant you, Mr. Humorless.

The tightness around his mouth eased and Tony reached for the legal pad he’d been making notes on for the last two hours. A line appeared between his brows when he pressed down on his new paper cut while searching for a clean sheet and his pen was red so he hoped Summers eyesight was as good as Ziva’s as he scrawled, ‘I’m plenty humorous,’ and flashed the message at Summers.

She grinned and nodded before holding up, ‘Thursday night?

Tony hesitated in replying, glancing again at Gibbs before his curiosity beat out common sense and he quickly wrote, ‘why not,’ and showed it to Summers.

A nod accompanied her flipping to another page and showing him, ‘I’ll pick you up at 7. Case pending.’

With a few flicks of his wrist Tony crossed out his original response and wrote beneath it the statement of, ‘You stole this from Love Actually.’

You bet your ass I did,’ was shown to Tony before Summers stood, tucking her legal pad under her arm and offering him a knowing smirk as she made her way past Gibbs and towards the hallway leading towards interrogations. Tony watched her go before shaking his head, a small satisfied smile on his face until he noticed Gibbs watching him.

His smile slipped and he cleared his throat, returning his gaze to his own work and within moments a shadow covered his notes and he glanced up, offered Gibbs a sheepish smile. “Need something, boss?”

A smirk and a shake his head accompanied Gibbs continuing on his way towards the coffee maker. “Careful, DiNozzo.”

He frowned, turning his head to question over his shoulder, “Boss?”

“Summers isn’t your typical blonde,” was called back to him and Tony swallowed, returning back to his work and the knowledge that Gibbs really did know all and see all.

A moment passed before Tony began to softly hum ‘We’re Off to See the Wizard’ as he continued to read and reread the reports in front of him in search of clues.

The end.
