She stared at him in disbelief. Was this really happening? Was he really saying this to her, right now?
She couldn't wrap her mind around it; there were so many things she wanted to say. She wanted to shout at him, pound her fists on his chest, grab his shirt and ask why, but she couldn't summon up the energy, the fight. So she just looked at the ground and prayed to the god she had thought she had stopped believing in long ago.
Ready to turn around and walk away from the words he was saying, she grabbed her purse from the kitchen table and was almost out the door when one he said that one thing that really struck her.
"You're too cold."
With those words echoing in her brain, she found the energy to fight back. She spun around in anger and stalked over to him, throwing her purse on the ground. She stopped when she stood close in front of him, too close but she didn't want to take a step back, didn't want to lose her courage.
Buffy looked into the black eyes of Severus and wanted to cry, but she pushed it off, needing to save it for later, when he wouldn't get the satisfaction of knowing that he could affect her enough to make her shed tears.
"I have devoted two years to this relationship. I have tried my hardest to make you happy. I have given everything
to you. And yet you have the nerve, the balls, to stand here in front of me and tell me that you don't want this anymore. Why? Why Severus? Why now, why here?"
Severus didn't say anything; he just looked down at the tiny slayer, a frown on his face.
"You say I'm cold." She poked a finger into his chest, and that felt so good she poked him again. "I'm
cold?" Shaking her head, Buffy felt her energy drain from her body. She just wanted to go, wanted to be by herself. Grabbing her purse, she turned away from Severus.
As she reached the door, she paused. Severus just wanted her to go, keep walking, don't look back, and don't tempt him to run after her and grab her arm and tell her to stop. But she wasn't turning back to plead with him, to show him the tears he knew she was crying. She just had one last thing to say to him.
"I've been every where around this world. I've seen many things. But I have never seen anything or been anywhere as cold as you."
And she walked through the door without looking back.
Severus stood there for a long while, staring at the door that shut him off from the world.
And he knew that she was right.
