This story takes place sometime after SWIC chapter five.
I hated writing the end of this chapter. I had to fight through tears (happy tears, not sad tears), because as I’m writing this, I’m imagining it happening on an episode of NCIS or Buffy in my head. This is one of the stories I’ve been anticipating writing (along with the other SFFDNA one: Found-will link when it’s posted).

Rona took a deep breath as the elevator doors opened. This was her first assignment for SWIC, and not an easy one. She had to tell a father – a former marine father – that his little girl wasn’t dead like he thought. Not to mention the sympathetic looks she got on the way up here once people found out she was going to see Gibbs.

And if that’s just because of his temperament, how bad was he gonna be when he found out why she was here? This was going to be a nightmare. Rona steeled her nerves, and walked into the bullpen.

“I’m looking for Agent Gibbs.” The older man in the corner glanced up at her, but then went back to his paperwork.

“That’d be me,” he said.

“I need to speak with you in private.”

“About?”

“Kelly.” Gibbs’ head snapped up, startling the other three in the bullpen. He stared at her for a moment – a long, almost intimidating moment, where Rona had to reassure herself that she could still break him in half far easier than he could do to her.

“Come with me,” he said. They headed back towards the elevator. When it started moving down, Gibbs hit the switch stopping them, and then turned and glared at her silently. Rona took that as a signal to start.

“Several years ago you were approached by a British man working for the Watcher’s Council. He told you your daughter was special, probably specifically used the word ‘potential’ a lot.”

“Yeah, that she could be called as the Slayer. I got this back then. I told him to get out.”

“And he did – they did, for a while anyway. Typical Council M.O. was to take Potential Slayers from their family, with or without the family’s permission. Kelly, they wouldn’t have taken because you were a Marine, and America is very protective of their Armed Forces and the family of their Armed Forces. But then the crash happened. Your wife died, but your daughter didn’t.”

“I’ve been to her grave.”

“And you were in a coma during the funeral. The second the Council was sure you were out of commission for a while, they took her, edited everyone’s memories that Kelly was dead too, with a body too damaged for an open casket. They told her, you were killed in action.”

“I’ll kill the bastards!”

“Sorry, they’re already dead. Explosion wiped most of them out. UN contacted the Active Slayer to set it up her way. Only now all the Potentials who’ve started going through puberty but haven’t ended it yet have become Slayers. Buffy, the last of the one-girl-in-all-the-world spiel, commissioned a DNA database for those Slayers. Normally the Military Database is only used to ID t he dead, but they made an exception for us.”

“Where is she?”

“Downstairs, in a car in front of the building.” Gibbs hit the switch again, and they continued going down. Rona lead the way to the car outside. Kelly was no longer waiting in the car, but rather leaning against the hood of it.

“Kelly,” Gibbs whispered. She looked so much like Shannon did.

“Dad!” She jumped into his arms giving him a hug. “They told me you were dead, but you’re not. You’re here!”

“Yeah, baby, I’m here. I’m here, and I’m not going anywhere.”

Rona sighed in relief. It didn't go as bad as she thought.
