“Buffy?” Willow asked as the blonde hung up the phone.
“That was the FBI office in New York. One of ours was killed in an explosion,” Buffy said.
“Oh, God,” Xander said. “Who?”
“A Kate Moreau. I need to go check it out,” Buffy said, heading for the stairs. “Oh! Damn it, but I can’t. I have to be in West Virginia to meet the FBI’s BAU.”
“Two Slayers are missing, two are dead, and one’s in the ICU. Can one of you go to New York?”
“I will,” Willow volunteered.
“Thanks Will, I owe you one.”
“No problem,” Willow said, as Buffy went upstairs.
“Well, not Giles, but it gets you away from Kennedy,” Xander said.
“Yeah. I should pack – oh, but what if Kennedy is there?”
“I’ll send Faith ahead of you to make sure she’s not. Give her ten minutes,” Xander said, heading towards the phone.
Two hours later, Willow was fully packed and sitting in an airplane, that was ready to take off. She had Kate’s file in front of her. Kate’s ‘father’ Robert, was actually her Watcher, and also a professional thief and conman, teaching those skills to her in addition to the skills she’d need as a Slayer.
Kate was too old to have been called in the mass calling, but she had agreed to become a Watcher. She was due to start in Cleveland next week, but the plane she was on exploded before take off. As her own plane took off, Willow wished she had argued more for her to teleport to New York.
According to the FBI report, hidden near the back of her file, her boyfriend Neal Caffrey was currently the prime suspect, over the protests of Agent Peter Burke, and was being sent back to prison. Willow frowned, and pulled out her cell phone, before calling the Special Agent in Charge of the White Collar Unit.
“Hold it,” Hughes said, stopping the men who were about to enter the elevator with Caffrey and take him back to prison. Hughes pressed a button on his cell phone, and held it up in the air.
“Would you please repeat that, Agent Rosenberg?” he asked. A woman’s voce came over the phone.
“I don’t want Caffrey going anywhere. Handcuff him to Agent Burke if you have too. He is not to leave that building until I get there.
“Who are you?” one of the men asked.
“Agent Willow Rosenberg, SWIC.
“This isn’t a SWIC case.”
“Yes it is. Kate Moreau is on file as working for us. That makes it our case. Caffrey stays put.
“He’s the prime suspect.”
“Which I will deal with, as soon as I get to New York.
” Hughes pressed the button again.
“Thank you, Agent Rosenberg. I’ll ensure Caffrey is here when you arrive. Goodbye.” He closed the phone.
“You heard her boys. Caffrey stays put. Burke, stay with him.” “Yes sir.”
