This starts shortly after The Dark Knight.
A single drop of blood – just one – and the witnesses are sure it came from the Batman. It had already been checked against the Joker’s – it wasn’t his – and none of the hostages had been there – they had been huddled up in another part of the building – so it was likely Batman’s blood.

There were no matches in Local or State DNA databases, so Batman’s DNA and the Joker’s DNA were being tested against National databases.

And Jim Gordon hoped to God that whoever the Batman was, his DNA wasn’t on file somewhere.

“Sir?” one of the detectives said, as he knocked on the doorframe.

“Find the Batman?” Gordon asked.

“No, sir. Not exactly. There were two partial matches for Batman, and one for Joker.”

“Let me see.” The detective handed him three pieces of paper.

“Hadrian Potter, Alexander Harris, and Faith Lehane.”

“Do we know anything about them?”

“They all work for an organization called SWIC. Harris and Lehane’s files are classified by the U.S. Army. And Potter has dual-citizenship with us and England. There’s nothing in his file here, and no one in England has been able to get anything on him past the age of eleven.”

“Damn.” Inwardly, however, Gordon was cheering.

“There’s something else, sir.”

“The press already caught wind of it. They’re running the story tonight. The rest of the coast will probably run it in the morning.”

“Wonderful.” Gordon sighed.

Ten numbers on a piece of paper taped to his window the day after Harvey Dent’s death. Jim knows exactly who it belongs too, but hasn’t called it before now.

“Gordon,” came the gruff voice of Batman. Jim looked out the window at his sun-lit backyard, and wondered what the Batman did during the day.

“I thought you should hear it before the news shows it tonight. Your DNA came back with partial matches during the National DNA search – two of them.”

“…Partial?” the gruff voice was lighter. Jim smiled; at least the Batman was keeping his real voice hidden while going after the bad guys.

“Congratulations – you’re a father.”

“Who?” the gruffness was back.

“Alexander Harris and Faith Lehane. Best we can tell, they’re currently in Cleveland, but their files are classified by the Army.

“…Thank you.”

And the line went dead.
