Part Four

The conversation about James’ eating habits went both better and worse than Xander had anticipated. On one hand Xander had survived. On the other hand James got that little wrinkle between his brow that Xander had come to associate with James’ unhappiness at Xander’s humanness.

“Do vampires have to drink human blood?” Xander asked while James and he sat intertwined on Charlie’s living room sofa watching television, a bowl of popcorn mostly empty sitting on Xander’s lap. The house was fortunately absent of all it’s human inhabitants except for Xander, which had lead to the teen’s timing of raising the issue.

“You’ll change your mind once you’ve tasted human blood for the first time, animal blood just doesn’t compare.” James stated as he carded a lazy hand through Xander’s hair. “A vampire that drinks animal blood is only one step above a human; pathetic.” Insisted James spitting out the word pathetic with a great deal of distaste. Xander wisely chose not to mention that he himself was a pathetic human knowing that James would instantly offer to change that for him. Without perhaps giving Xander a choice in the matter. James could be rather impulsive when he was in a mood. Instead Xander made a noise in the back of his throat that could be taken for general thoughtfulness, rather than a yay or a nay to the idea.

“ all humans taste the same?” asked Xander knowing he was entering dangerous territory. James paused in the stroking of Xander’s hair and looked down at his human that was tucked securely into his side.

“Some taste better than others, the way that some apples taste better than others. Its all a matter of personal preference.” The vampire replied. When Xander began to fidget James’ hand returned to its task. “Why all these questions?” The slight growl in the tone that the question was asked in made Xander freeze.

Xander looked down at his bowl of popcorn that was now mostly empty, so as not to have to look James in the eye as the vampire tried to establish eye contact. The tension in the air made Xander’s tough feel thick as he tried to work up enough saliva to make talking comfortable. James’ arm started to tighten around the human.

“This is hard for me to say cause I’m on the whole no eating humans is a good thing team.” Xander paused laying his head on James’ tense shoulder, trying to seem submissive to the now openly growling vampire, who had tightened his grip on Xander’s hair to just this side of painful. “I get that you don’t want to eat animals...and I know you won’t stop eating humans, so I guess I’m asking you not to eat soccer mom’s and girl guides.”

“Are you giving me an ultimatum?” Asked James‘. Xander shook his head as much as he could with his hair still in the vampires grip, knowing James was only a step or two from becoming angry with him.

“No, just making a request. I’d really like it if you wouldn’t eat the people of Forks, they probably taste bad anyway.” said Xander trying to lighten the oppressive mood that now filled the living room.

“I have to eat Xander, and so will you when you’re a vampire.” stated James. Xander relaxed slightly, James was being the vampiric version of reasonable, giving Xander an opening for negotiation.

“I’m not asking you not to eat, I’d just be really grateful if you hunted outside of the general area of Forks.”

James brow wrinkled as he looked at the teen, his red eyes studying the human as a cat studies a plump juicy mouse. Xander who was now looking into James‘ face giving the vampire his own version of Willow’s ‘PleasepleasepleaseIloveyouforeverifyoudothisforme‘ face saw the wrinkle and understood what it meant. Xander’s had lifted seemingly of its own accord and tried to smooth out the indent.

James watched the human teen for a long time, neither of them spoke. James loosened and let go of Xander’s hair. Xander wrapped his arms around James’ torso even through the vampire was as immobile as stone.

A split second later James pressed Xander against the soft cushions of the sofa and proceeded to sniff and lick him about the neck and jaw. Xander was startled at the lightening fast rearrangement of his body; but new better than to struggle to get away while trapped under a large predator.

“James?” asked Xander once he was sure his voice wouldn’t squeak or croak.

“Shhhhh, I’ll make everything better.” James began to replace his licks with light nips that had Xander squirming.

“What? James!” gasped Xander after one particularly hard bite. He became afraid that James was going to change him right then and there. Instincts finally got the better of Xander and he bucked against James trying to dislodge the larger body, but James rode it out and Xander tired.

“It’s alright Xander, I’ll take care of you. I’ll never leave you.” James assured as he opened his mouth wide, he was going to make Xander his.

Tears sprang up in the teen’s eyes. This was it. Play with tigers and get eaten. Fangs clamped down on his neck and were beginning to break through the skin of his neck, when the sound of a car door slamming shut reached them. James was off him in an instant. His quick movement seemed to suck all the air with him and Xander struggled for breath. James peered out the window.

“It’s your uncle.” stated James with a growl. Xander hiccuped a sob escaping from his constricting throat as fear for his uncle raced through his body making him shake. His uncle was going to die because of him, just like Jesse. The sob brought James‘ attention back to the teen and he frowned when he saw Xander’s almost hysterical state. He didn’t understand what had caused his mate to be this way, what was wrong? James moved back to the sofa and wrapped his arms around the teen, James rocked him back and forth trying to shush him. “I promised I wouldn’t hurt your family and I meant it Xander, don’t behave so.” Xander could do nothing but cry, the more he tried to stop the more the sobs escaped.

The front door opened. Charlie shuffled through struggling with numerous grocery bags. He stopped when he entered the living room having seen the state that his nephew was in. “What the hell is going on here?” He demanded in the tone he reserved for the most troublesome members of the Forks community. He put the bags down as his hand went instinctively to the service piece holstered on his hip.

Xander could only shake his head, unable to speak. He wanted to tell his uncle to run, take Bella and run. Leave him and run as far and fast as he could, to move somewhere sunny.

“We had a fight, and I got angry.” stated James, looking rather shamefaced. The vampire was a good actor, but Charlie was used to hearing that line when called to domestic disturbances. “I scared him, I can’t seem to get him to calm down.” genuine concern made its way onto James’ face. “He managed to get out something about his mom and dad and then he just broke down.” lied James.

Charlie looked at Xander who now had his arms wrapped around James and his face buried in the blonde’s neck. From what he had newly discovered about his sister and her husband, it was plausible that Xander could have assumed that a fight with a significant other would lead to violence. He may have over reacted and become frightened.

The shaking was starting to subside and the sobs quieting as James lied about/explained the situation to Charlie. Even through just moments before the vampire had been posed to rip into his throat, Xander couldn’t help but feel grateful that James wouldn’t hurt his family. He kissed the pale neck in front of him in thanks, before letting go of the vampire and standing a blush on his face.

“Xander are you alright son?” asked Charlie.

“Yeah.” Xander replied his voice hoarse. “I’m just gonna wash my face I’ll be right back.” Xander disappeared into the kitchen and the sounds of running water and splashing could be heard. Xander reappeared a moment later looking a damp but otherwise much calmer.

“Sorry about that James, Charlie. I guess I have some baggage and issues I haven’t worked through yet.” said Xander with what could pass for a sheepish smile.
Charlie considered both Xander and James. “I think it’s time for you to leave James. You can come back tomorrow and work out whatever it was that caused the fight, but I think a little distance and time will give you both a new perspective about whatever the issues are.”

James looked at Xander who are now looking pale again. It was obvious that James would have to work on Xander’s trust issues. It would be better to do that while Xander was human so that the newborn vampire would trust him instinctively. So James nodded at Charlie’s order that was pretending to be a suggestion.

“I’m sorry Xander.” Said James as he moved over to Xander giving the teen and hug and a chaste kiss on the lips. “I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”

“Sure and thanks.” Xander said knowing that the vampire would know what he was thanking him for.

“Anything for you Xander.” replied James before he picked up his jacket. Perhaps he would do as Xander asked and hunt outside of Forks if it would make his mate more comfortable. He would have to think on it. James nodded at Charlie before leaving the house.

“Xander are you really okay?” Charlie asked concerned about his nephew and thinking that the teen could now speak freely now that James had left.

“Yeah it was a miscommunication and an over reaction” said Xander as he collected the mostly empty bowl of popcorn and brought it to the kitchen, he dumped the left overs and loaded it into the dishwasher. He turned to find his uncle studying him from the door way.

“I’m okay.” Xander asserted, doing his best not to become defensive.

“You wanna talk about it?”

“Maybe” replied Xander “I should work it out with James first though,...if thats okay?”

“Sure. It’s getting late, we should probably call Bella to see when she’s going to get home to make dinner. She’ll make someone a good wife one day.”

Xander barked out a laugh his mood lifting. “I’m gonna tell her you said that, you’ll be eating burnt potatoes for a month.”
