Chapter 9: Returning

The next evening Dawn and Harry were released for the Feast. They made their way down to the Great Hall. Slytherin colors decorated everything. They had barely taken their seats when Dumbledore stood and awarded points to Gryffindor for Harry, Ron, Hermione, and even Neville’s, roles in the events of the Sorcerer’s Stone. The decorations changed and Gryffindor had won the House Cup.

And then suddenly the exam results were back. There wardrobes were emptied and it was time to return home for the summer. Dawn told him to take the train that the family would meet him at Kings Cross. So she and Sirius packed up and Apparated from Hogsmeade back to London with Jocelyn.

They loaded up the car and reached the station at the same time as the redheaded mother and her daughter.

“You must be Mrs. Weasley,” Dawn said as she approached the woman. “Your son Ron and mine are friends. My name is Dawn, this is my husband Sirius and our daughter Jocelyn.”

“Oh and who is your son?” she asked as they shook hands.

“Harry,” she smiled. “And we’re professors at Hogwarts so we’ve met all your sons.”

“Professors Black,” she nodded. “One of you teaches Runes and the other Muggle Studies.”

“Mrs. Weasley-”

“Please, dear, call me Molly. This is my youngest, Ginny, she starts next year.”

“How long until they arrive?” Ginny asked jumping up and down.

“Not long,” Molly replied. “Ron was already wondering about having Harry and Hermione over this summer.”

“I believe we can arrange something,” Dawn smiled, “from what Percy told me we live not far from you.”

“Really? How could we have not known?”

“I believe you’ll understand. Once we’re settled I’ll send an owl.”

“That’d be wonderful.”

“Here they come!” Jocelyn and Ginny yelled as a few students started coming through the barrier.

“I believe those are the Grangers,” Dawn said to Molly pointing to a couple of eager looking Muggles standing a few feet away.

“Excuse me,” she moved towards them. “Are you the Grangers?”

“I’m sorry do I know you?” Mrs. Granger asked.

“I’m Dawn, one of the Professors Black. Your daughter and my son, Harry, are friends at Hogwarts. I thought I should introduce myself, my husband Sirius, and Mrs. Molly Weasley whose son Ronald is also friends of Hermione and Harry.”

By the time Harry, Hermione, Ron and the Weasley boys appeared through the barrier the adults were talking like old friends. They stopped when the children were in front of them.

“Okay you three,” Dawn broke the awkwardness. “Say ‘see you later,’ and we’ll see about getting you together this summer.”

“Really?” Harry said, looking excited.

“Yes. And I have something for each of you,” she pulled a handful of strings from her pocket and handed one to each of the trio, keeping one for herself. They were leather with two small stone pendants on each; one was a colored stone and the other was grey with identical engravings.

“The Sorcerer’s Rune,” Hermione said identifying the identical engravings.

On Ron’s was an amber stone with an engraving of a chess knight. Hermione’s was an amethyst with an open scroll. Harry’s was emerald with a teardrop.

“So we don’t forget,” Dawn said.

“Blimey, we aren’t going to forget!” Ron said.

“We do forget,” she told him. “We romanticize these things and can end up forgetting what it could have cost us.” She touched the children’s hands. “There is much to lose, you were lucky this time, remember that.”

“Is that one yours?” Hermione asked.

Dawn nodded and showed them. Three small square stones were along hers. The center one was green. The one on the right was the rune for Jocelyn. The other was the Sorcerer’s rune.
