Petunia Dursley frantically paced the living room while her husband stood by the couch. “Vernon, we have to do something. In one year those… those… freaks will be coming for that blasted boy. We can’t let it happen. I will not have that rubbish in house!”
“We, won’t, Pet. We’ll just tell them he can’t go when they come,” Vernon said.
Petunia scowled. “Like that’s going to stop them. Those people won’t take no for an answer. They’ll bully us until we agree out of fear. We have to get out of here.”
“You mean leave Surry?” Vernon asked.
“I mean leave England completely. It’s the only way. We have to go somewhere no one can find us. It’s the only way to truly get away from them,” Petunia said.
“But where would we go. We have a life here. My job is here,” Vernon said.
“Well, you can get another job someplace else. It seems like a small price to pay to get away from the freaks,” Petunia said.
“Well, I suppose I could try, but where would we go?” he asked.
“Someplace small. Small towns are normal.”
A couple of weeks later, Vernon came home with a huge smile on his face. He went into the kitchen, where he found his wife and the Potter boy, who was washing dishes. “Boy, get out of here!”
Harry immediately stopped what he was doing and bolted. He knew better than to dawdle when his uncle ordered him away.
“Vernon, what is it?” Petunia asked.
“I did it, Pet. I got a new job in the states,” Vernon said.
Petunia grew a smile to match her husbands. “Really? That’s wonderful.”
“Isn’t it? I’ll be working for a landscaping company and I’ll make a lot more money,” Vernon said.
“Well, where are we moving to?” she asked.
“California. Sunnydale, California.”
Harry walked through the halls of his new school. He was freaking out because he was completely lost. He was supposed to find room 212, but he had no idea where it was. He turned around to backtrack and ended up bumping into someone. He looked down and saw three kids about his age. There were two boys with dark brown hair and a girl with red hair. “Oh, sorry.”
“It’s no problem,” said the boy he bumped into. “You’re not from around here, are you?
“Did the accent give me away?” Harry asked jokingly.
The boy laughed. “Yeah, but also, this is a small town. Everybody knows everybody. So where are you headed?”
“Room 212,” Harry replied.
“Oh, that’s Miss Archer’s classroom. That’s who we all have too. Come on, we’ll take you. I’m Xander by the way. Xander Harris. This is Jesse and Willow.”
“Nice to meet you. Well, come one. We should get to class before we’re late,” Xander said before leaving the way.
Dumbledore was sitting in his office when Minerva McGonagall came in frantically. “Albus, we have a problem.”
“What is it, Minerva?” Albus asked. He could tell by the look on her face that something was definitely up.
“I just finished with all the letters for the upcoming first years. Take a look at this,” Minerva said before handing him a letter.
“This is Harry Potter’s letter,” Dumbledore commented.
“Yes, but look at the address.”
Dumbledore did so and immediately realized the problem. Where the address was supposed to be, it said ‘Unknown.’ That had never happened before. The letters were charmed to find the person. “We must go to the Dursley residence.”
“I’ve already checked. Apparently the Dursleys moved a year ago,” Minera said.
“Where to?” he asked.
“I don’t know. The letter should tell us where he is, but obviously something is blocking the spell.”
The twinkle in Dumbledore’s eyes disappeared. This was bad. Harry Potter was missing and there was no means to find him. They had to find a way to locate him and soon. All of their lives depended on it.
Harry got off the bus and walked onto the campus of Sunnydale High. He found two of his best friends, Xander and Jesse leaning against the front of the building. “Hey, guys.”
“Hey, man. What’s happening?” Xander asked as they clasped hands.
“Nothing much. The relatives still suck,” Harry said. Life with the Dursley’s hadn’t changed much. They still hated him, and the feeling was mutual. The only thing that made it bearable was that he had good friends since they’d moved. As much as Dudley and his new group of jerks had tried, they couldn’t scare his friends away.
“I hear you. Last night Tony got even more drunk than usual, came home, and started throwing things,” Xander said.
“Come on, guys, stop moping. It could be worse,” Jesse tried.
“Spoken from the guy who has like the best parents in the world,” Harry said.
“Hey, I’m just saying that things could always be worse,” Jesse said.
“Oh, I gotta hear this. Okay, Jesse, how can it be worse?” Xander asked.
Just then, Cordelia Chase came by with her posse. “Well, if it isn’t the loser brigade. I see you all still have your mommies dressing you,” she ridiculed. The others laughed as they all walked past them.
“One of you could have to live with her,” Jesse said.
Harry shivered. “Don’t even say things like that, Jesse.”
Xander shuddered. “Yeah, that’s just not even funny. I think I’d shoot myself if that happen.”
“Just the thought of it makes me want to hurl,” Harry added.
Suddenly, Xander’s attention was averted. He saw a hot blond coming their way. “Hey, guys, check it out.”
“Whoa, where’d she come from?” Jesse asked when he got a good look.
“She must be new here,” Harry said.
“I think I’m gonna go say hey,” Xander said smiling before making a move towards the girl.
“He’s going to get shot down,” Harry said certainly.
“Totally,” Jesse agreed.
“Come on, let’s go find Willow,” Harry said before leading the way inside.
