“Ms. Wickers? Can you wait a sec?”

Lorraine irritably turned around as she saw Caroline Steele approach her from the behind. Mayhap the younger woman had been just a pawn of Oliver Leek’s plot to take over England, but Lorraine still did not think that hiring Caroline to work for the ARC in an official capacity was a wise decision.

“Ms. Wickers? Are you listening to me?” Caroline was not backing down.

“Yes, I am,” Lorraine replied, irritably. “What do you want?”

“Well,” Caroline briefly hesitated before plunging in. “I don’t recognize the scent of your species, and I’m not sure from what time period in the future you’ve come from, but I just want to talk.”

“About what?” Lorraine instinctively replied, before trying to back paddle, desperately so. “I mean, I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

“That’s okay,” Caroline smiled, flashing teeth that were just too uniform to be properly human. “I just wanted to tell you that if things go south and you need a safe place to hide until the noise dies out or you’ll decide to get out of the country, I can help.”

“Thanks,” Lorraine snapped, flashing rather inhuman dentition of her own, “but I’m not from the future (or the past for that matter), I’m actually from an alternate reality.”

“Really?” Caroline did not back down. “Interesting. My offer still stands, though.”

“Very well, then it is a deal.”

And the two women shook hands.
