Chapter Three

Buffy and Faith were taking mental notes on the potentials. The older slayers were evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of the younger girls and determining who should be placed where in the upcoming battle.

Buffy stopped abruptly when she saw her little sister walking her way with a handsome stranger in tow.

Faith noticed the tension in the other slayer and turned from watching the potentials to see what had caught her attention.

“Alright, Mini-B! Caught yourself a hottie,” Faith said cheering on the younger girl.

“Faith, don’t encourage her,” Buffy scolded feeling like she had two irresponsible little sisters instead of just the one.

“Who is this?” Buffy asked Dawn in her most stern ‘you’re in deep trouble’ voice.”

“I’m Chris…” the boy tried to answer before Buffy threw him a looked that almost scared him more than Evil Wyatt did.

“I don’t believe I was talking to you,” Buffy informed him before moving her chilling gaze to where it rightfully belonged.

“He’s a friend of Willow’s,” Dawn started but she didn’t sound very confident as she squirmed under the powerful glare of her sister.

“Oh? Did Willow tell you that?” Buffy asked crossing her arms.

“Well. No, but…Look, he’s corporeal,” Dawn said, putting her hands on Chris’s arms as she moved to hide behind him.

Chris felt sorry for the girl.

“Dawn, how many times do I have to tell you… get out from behind the strange hottie…”Buffy said waiting patiently for her sister to stop cowering.

Dawn reluctantly stepped out from behind Chris.

“How many times do I have to tell you not to talk to strangers? We don’t know who is on our side anymore. For all we know he could be a minion of that crazy, evil preacher.” Buffy said trying to convey to Dawn that she was only trying to look out for her.

“But… he’s got eyes,” Dawn argued lamely. She knew she had lost this argument; she just wasn’t keen on giving up.

Chris breathed a sigh of relief when he saw Willow enter the backyard.

“Willow, will you please tell your friend that you know me?”

“Yeah, I know him.” She told the slayer distractedly as she walked up to Chris. “We gotta talk.”

Chris didn’t like the sound of that but he followed Willow to the kitchen in silence leaving behind a very smug Dawn.

When they got to the kitchen, Chris saw Kennedy standing in the corner looking at him curiously.

“You told her, didn’t you?” He said, turning to his charge with disappointment.

“I had to,” Willow told him. “Please don’t be mad.”

“I swear, you’re just like Phoebe,” He said, more to himself than to her.

“Who’s Phoebe?” Willow and Kennedy asked in unison.

“Doesn’t matter. The point is that neither of you can keep a secret,” Chris answered.

“I’m sorry. She was just so angry and I don’t deal with anger well,” Willow told him.

“She really doesn’t,” Buffy said from behind him. “And we don’t keep secrets around here. They only lead to trouble. So, whoever you are, spill. Who are you and what do you want?”
