A long-lost temple
Central Egypt

April 23, 2001

{ This is it, } Buffy Summers thought to herself, as she stared down at the falcon-headed statue of the Egyptian god, Horus, which she was holding in her lightly trembling hands. { This is the mythical Horus Incarnate totem - the statue that is supposedly created from a piece of Horus' actual body. }

{ And if the legends have any basis in fact, then this thing will be able to restore my powers, } she reminded herself, as she thought back to the event that had altered her life just as significantly as when she had first been Called as the Slayer.

"Excuse me, but, er, I don't believe I heard you correctly, Buffy," Giles said as he pulled out his handkerchief and frowned down at his glasses as he began wiping the already immaculate lenses.

"Yeah, you did, Giles," the petite blonde said with a mixture of anger and what some might say sounded like fear. "My Slayer powers haven't come back yet, the way you said they would.

"You said it would only take a day or so for the serum to wear off, but it's been three days since you gave the last shot of that crooshy-mental stuff, and I'm still just like I was before I was Called," Buffy elaborated.

"And I'm still having a hard time opening jars, and my backpack feels really heavy when I've got all my books in it," she complained, "and all of those bruises and cuts I got while fighting Kralik still aren't completely healed, like they would be if my Slayer powers were working.

"So, what's the problem here?" she demanded.

"Er, uhm, I-I'm not at all sure, Buffy," Giles hesitantly replied, as a concerned frown furrowed his forehead. "By all accounts I am familiar with, your Slayer abilities should have returned by now.

"I'll have Wesley check with the Council's historians, to determine whether there is any record of any sort of similar event in the Council's archives."

"Uhm, ah, well, ah, it would appear that you no longer possess any trace of the Slayer Spirit within you, Miss Summers, no matter how minute," Wesley finally managed to get out as the Scooby Gang stared at him with an unnervingly intense focus.

"WHAT?!!" Buffy half-screamed, her eyes wide with shock upon hearing the new Watcher report the results of the analytical spell he and Giles had cast just a few minutes previously.

"What's that mean, Giles?" the blonde immediately demanded as she spun to face her own (now ex-) Watcher. "What do I have to do, to get my Slayer powers back?"

"Well, uh, truthfully, Buffy, at the moment, I have absolutely no idea whatsoever," Giles answered , frowning as he considered the information they'd just received.

"This is going to require a great deal of research," he declared as he turned and headed to his office.

"I'm sorry to have to inform you of this, Miss Summers, but all of the tests we’ve conducted indicate that the Cruciamentum formula negated the Slayer abilities that remained in you subsequent to your death two years ago, as would be expected," Wesley said, in as kindly and compassionate a tone as he could manage.

"Unfortunately for your purposes, however, since the Slayer Spirit no longer resides in you – having moved on, first to Kendra, and then subsequently to Miss Lehane, here – you have no way to restore your abilities to their previous condition," he went on, "and you have thus reverted to the same state of health and well-being you enjoyed prior to your being Called as the Slayer.

"For all intents and purposes, you are once again a normal adolescent female."
