: None really. Just a friend from Giles' past they don't have to worry about - well... not like Ethan... ;-) I messed a bit with character ages in order to get the two friends within about 10 years of each other age-wise.Ripper and Rocket
Giles took another sip of his drink and smiled politely at yet another dignitary. How he managed to get talked into coming to this reception he'd never understand. Catching a glimpse of blonde hair out of the corner of his eye, he quickly recalled. Buffy had asked him to be her escort.
A small, but real, smile played on his lips as he thought about their relationship and how it had improved. After the fall of Sunnydale and their disastrous interactions there, neither of them thought their relationship repairable, but after Dawn worked out her issues with Buffy, Giles grew hopeful that the girl he'd trained had become a woman who would forgive him.
It took a while, neither willing to dive too deeply into the emotions behind their actions, but it eventually got sorted. Their relationship had never quite been father/daughter as Travers suggested, but neither had the correct labels to apply.
As Watcher/Slayer, they were actually more like Mentor/Student. But by the end of their time in Sunnydale, his hope that Buffy could stand on her own had made them peers. Accepting that change in their working relationship allowed them to get past their former problems and ideas and begin to know each other anew. As it turns out, he liked Buffy the person and she seemed to like Rupert. They both treasured their friendship.
Another flash of blond hair caught his eye and he turned to see a tall, willowy blonde standing on the edge of a group of military people. Making his way closer, he smiled warmly as he caught the blonde's eye and read the pleased surprise there.
"Ripper," she greeted, offering her hand.
Giles stepped past the hand and drew her into a hug. "Rocket. You look good."
"Not looking so bad yourself," she replied.
Her eyes slipped to the side of him. Turning, Giles spotted Buffy standing slightly behind him. Her face was polite enough, but he could see the tension in her body. Moving slightly to draw her into the conversation, he introduced, "Buffy, may I introduce an old friend of mine, Samantha Carter. Samantha, this is Buffy Summers."
Buffy offered her hand, but looked at Giles. "A friend like Ethan?" she asked, her voice friendly, but the protective fire in her eyes caused him to smile.
"No," Giles reassured, "Quite the opposite."
At his assurance, the tension left her body and her smile became natural and honest. "It's a pleasure to meet you Samantha. I'd love to hear your stories about Ripper, but I'll let the two of you catch up a bit first."
The two watched the smaller blonde disappear back into the crowd, amused smiles on their faces.
"She seems protective," Sam observed.
"Yes, well. She's met Ethan." He chucked at the expression that crossed Sam's face at that name.
"So what have you been doing since we last spoke? It doesn't appear you became a grocer."
"No. I ended up in research - ancient languages and artifacts. Did you make it up into space?" Giles could only return the brilliant smile that appeared on Sam's face at the question. It was good to see someone achieve their childhood dreams.
* * * * * ******* * * * * * ******** * * * * *Just a quick end note: Giles and Sam met after the death of Ripper's friend when he was looking for an escape from the dark world he'd been playing in. Sam was a teenager in Enlgand with her father who had been stationed there. The teen and twenty-something struck up a friendship.
