: I'm not all that familiar with Smallville, but think I have enough of the plot for this to be workable - just a few more years in the future and on the national level rather than the state... :-)A Story In The Halls Of Power
Despite the position being uncomfortably new to him, Giles did his best to walk down the halls of American power with confidence and surety. He knew the path to the office he needed - had memorized it prior to the meeting - but still couldn't help but feel a little intimidated by it all.
At least his first meeting would be with a senator and not the president and from what he'd read about this senator, she would be, perhaps, the easiest for him to speak with and the hardest when it came to questions. If he understood the way things worked here correctly, then winning her over would ease the way for the rest of their introduction and plans.
He shifted his briefcase in his hand, still puzzled over the childr... Buffy, Xander and Willow's insistence on bringing the few pictures of their early years together as well as some current ones. It was Buffy who explained it with a shrug and the explanation, "She's a mom."
Reaching the appointed office several minutes early, he settled in the reception area and waited. Taking in his surroundings, he felt a small amount of surprise at the combination of sophistication, practicality and "rustic middle American" touches. All together, it gave the reception area a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
Exactly on time, the senator's door opened and she walked out.
Rising from his seat, he waited until the Senator's attention fixed on him before offering a warm smile and his hand. "Senator Kent. My name is Rupert Giles."
Her eyes ran over him, evaluating. What conclusions she drew he couldn't begin to guess, but her hand shake was firm as expected. Leading the way, they settled in her office.
Surprisingly, she did not choose to sit behind the desk, but instead led him to a small seating area off to the side. Two comfortable arm chair sat at an angle to each other, a tray sat upon the small table between the chairs with what appeared to be a tea service on it. A small smile appeared on Giles' face at the thought.
As she settled in her chair a faint blush appeared on the Senator's cheeks. "I'm afraid I don't get to indulge in tea during meetings very often, and you being from England, I took a chance."
A true smile appeared on Gile's face. "A cup of tea would be most welcome," he assured. While she poured, he took in his surroundings, as with the reception area, the office felt warm and inviting, elegant without being overwhelming. He also noticed several pictures behind her desk - many of a young boy and an older man - her husband and son as well as a few of other children. Seeing their prominent display in her office, he understood why the chil... Buffy, Xander and Willow sent him off with pictures.
With tea poured and doctored to taste, Senator Kent got straight to business, "So, Mr. Giles of the New Council, I've read the files we have on your people and, while the work you do is important, I have several reservations and concerns about your methods."
Giles spotted the hard glint in her eye at that last statement and wanted to sigh. He'd seen that look before in the eyes of Joyce Summers when she confronted him about Buffy's calling and training.
"Yes, we assumed you would, Senator," he assured, reaching for his briefcase. "Unfortunately, the information you have is ... inaccurate. We had a... a shake-up if you will and myself and the children... other directors found ourselves face with a nearly overwhelming, but entire unprecedented opportunity to make things better."
"Children?" the senator asked, her eyebrows rising.
Giles flushed slightly at the slip. "Oh dear. I don't suppose we can ignore that slip?" he inquired offering a shy and unknowingly charming smile. Breaking eye contact, he opened his briefcase and drew out the pictures he'd questioned bringing. The photo on top was from their first year together. A soft smile appeared on his face as he recalled how these three young people turned his world upside-down. Offering the top picture, he pointed them out, "Buffy, Willow and Xander." He saw a softening in her eyes and immediately changed his presentation. Instead of the charts, graphs and other information, he settled in to tell the story of Sunnydale and what they hoped to happen now.
