Recruiting Job
By Beriaearewen

Leaning into the curve, Faith allowed herself to enjoy the simple pleasure riding her bike always gave her. The thrum of the engine beneath her, the feel of cutting through the wind, feeling it whip around her...

Riding was the closest she could come to freedom without slaying.

Glancing at the street sign, she realized that she was almost to her destination. She fought the urge to sigh at this, almost instinctively knowing things weren't going to go smoothly.

There was a reason she didn't do this sort of thing. Not only did she not feel comfortable talking to newbie slayers, they - and their families - were never exactly comfortable around her.

The last time she'd done one of these meet-and-greet things, not only had the door been slammed in her face, but she'd lost her cool when the father immediately started yelling at the girl, followed by the sound of a fist meeting flesh.

Needless to say, she got really friendly with the Council's lawyers, really quickly.

Now they were sending her on another meet-and-greet despite her protests.

The logic of the assignment hadn't swayed her decision to do this. Yes, she was the only council person currently free to travel to the West coast, but really, who in their right mind would make her the poster-girl for the New Council?

No, the logic hasn't swayed her in the least. Dawn's pleading hadn't moved her, nor had Robin's cajoling.

She'd been impressed that Buffy said nothing other than to let her decide for herself.

The deciding factor in Faith heading out to San Francisco was something she knew no one was supposed to see.

With Red down in South America and boy-toy in Africa, Giles in England and Buffy stationed in Rome, she didn't see them often, but the needs of recruiting brought Buffy to the US on Dawn's break.

While out avoiding people and their attention, she'd found a room she didn't recall. The door was cracked open, so she peered inside.

It proved to be an office. The desk was covered by paperwork, but what struck her was the figure standing by the window.

She'd seen Buffy up, down, happy, sad, jealous, lost and about everything else, but the way she stood and the expression on her face just then...

Suddenly a road trip to San Francisco for a little meet-and-greet didn't seem so awful.

So, she'd agreed and now, here she was, ready to meet another mini and turn their world upside down.

Getting off her bike, she removed her helmet, grabbed the folder of information from the messenger bag strapped to the back and headed to the door.

She knocked and waited. An attractive guy opened it and greeted her with only a hint of trepidation as he took in her outfit.

"May I help you?"

Taking a deep breath, she told herself she could do this and spoke. "My name is Faith and I'm here on behalf of the Sineya School for Gifted Girls. Are Michelle Tanner and her parent or guardian available?"
