Story: Slayer of Stargates

Buffy hadn’t been a part of his team for very long, but Jack had quickly taken to the newest, youngest and most dangerous member of his team. He saw her as the daughter he had never had and he liked to imagine that Buffy looked at him as the father she wished she could have had.

Jack had never felt such strong parental feelings towards any member of his team and he tried hard not to let it get in the way of their missions. Because no matter how much he sometimes would have liked to keep Buffy away from the worst situations, he knew all too well that she had probably seen more and done more than they had despite her young age.

The rest of the team had also picked up on the fact that Buffy and him shared something special. They had often mentioned that Buffy and him acted eerily alike in certain situations. His usual reaction when someone told him that was to smirk, because he simply didn’t have anything to say about that. His mother had always told him that keeping his mouth shut was preferred over lying, after all. And denying that there was any resemblance between him and Buffy would have been lying. There was no mistaking that.

They all flew out of the Stargate, hitting the ramp leading up to it and rolling down it. A faint sound could be heard behind them before the Stargate shut down completely.

“Are you two insane?!” Daniel yelled as soon as he got his bearings, nursing his bruises.

An angry red flush spread from his face down his neck before it disappeared under the collar of his shirt. Buffy absently wondered how far that red flush went.

Jack glared at his team. “No, we’re not.”

“So destroying a Stargate is something you’d normally do?” Sam asked, cradling her left hand closely to her chest.

“Well, no,” Buffy replied, “but we had good reasons for it.”

“Such as making sure that the angry aliens hell-bent on destroying earth couldn’t come through it,” Jack added.

“So you made sure we could never visit that planet again by destroying their stargate with a couple of well-placed explosives?” Sam asked.

“In case you hadn’t noticed, not only were they planning of killing us—granted, that’s not that unusual in our line of work—but they had actually figured out how the stargate worked,” Buffy pointed out. “It would take them less than a second to visit earth. And they didn’t exactly have the best intentions for us and our planet, did they?”

“End of discussion,” Jack said, cutting off whatever Daniel and Sam were about to say.

He abruptly turned on his heel and strode out of the room, leaving his team members behind. Giving the others one last look, Buffy followed quickly, catching up with Jack before he reached the door.

Daniel and Sam noticed the happy and smug looks that Buffy and Jack shared before they left for their respective rooms and looked at each other. Shrugging, they followed them out of the room. The likeness between those two had never been as obvious as it was at that moment.

That same day Willow and Xander received an e-mail from Buffy telling about her day. The subject line of Buffy’s e-mail read: “Slayer of Stargates”.

End of “Slayer of Stargates”.
