Chapter 7

Disclaimer: none of the characters are mine, except for aliens and assassins.

Dr. Grace Monroe was having a typical day for Eureka – it started more or less normally, but then it grew increasingly weird. On this particular day the weirdness came more or less in the person of Allison Blake, who came over to Grace’s medical wing for a routine check-up. Judging from the other woman’s overall cheerful demeanour, Grace assumed that whatever this check-up will produce, it won’t be bad, and she was correct.

“Allison, I don’t believe it. This is probably your best physical up to date!” she spoke, barely believing her own results. “How did you do it? Care to share?”

“Don’t look at me – I’m honestly as surprised as you are!” Allison cheerfully replied. “I decided to do a routine check – Jenna’s been restless lately and I was feeling down, and this came up! Apparently, I’m in an awesome physical condition! Cool, hah?”

“Very,” Grace agreed with just a bit of jealousy. “And since you’re feeling so on top of the world, care to do me a small favour?”

“Sure,” Allison nodded. “What do you need?”

“Help me clean up the office – sort out the paperwork, mainly,” Grace admitted, sheepishly. “Henry would’ve helped me to do that today, but Fargo asked to help out him and Holly when showing Holly’s cousin around Eureka, so Henry couldn’t-“

“Sure, I’ll be happy to help!” Allison replied, before hesitating: “It won’t take too long, will it? I have my own paperwork to return to – I know that it tends to spread or reproduce almost by osmosis.”

“You mean that as a metaphor, right?” Grace asked after a brief pause. “Because when I asked Pamela about this one day, she said that she meant it literally. I didn’t notice that, but I guess I’m not ready to dismiss it out of hand either.”

“Really? But no, I meant it solely as a metaphor. That said, we should probably visit Pamela one day and see how her paperwork woes are going. So, what do you need help with, exactly?”

“So, what do you need help with, boss?” a trio of the Consortium’s assassins stood before their alien leader.

The alien gazed passionlessly at them with its multiple eyes (even the one that got hurt in the mindscape): two humans – well, humanoids - with vaguely oriental features... and one grey-skinned bestial giant, all of whom had been modified to the alien’s liking.

“Find me Beverly Barlowe,” it commanded telepathically. “Find her and her new allies and bring her to me after spreading as much misery and mayhem as possible! That is my command!”

Without further ado the trio turned around and vanished in the Consortium’s corridors.
