Chapter 8

Disclaimer: none of the characters are mine.

Before Jack Carter came to Eureka Dr. Henry Deacon had a life that was relatively quiet and uneventful, especially since he was more or less Eureka’s resident mechanic, nothing more. Then came the Carters, and suddenly Henry found himself first a candidate mayor for Eureka (seriously) and then married...without doing actually marrying due to a severe breach of time travel protocol...

And now more new faces were in town, and Henry had to admit that he was rather nervous regarding just what sort of new troubles they will bring to Eureka. Of course, maybe it will be a good thing, but still, Henry dug in, and prepared for a time of troubles once again.

And then one of the worse things to have happened to any man had happened to him: several women (at least four in number, all familiar to him to one extent or another) came to him and began talking all at once.

“You two!” Henry quickly pointed to the pair in front.

“Henry, we have a problem. Where’s Jack?” his wife and Jo Lupo said at the same time.

“You first!” Henry quickly told his wife.

“Henry! When we were working through my paperwork, Allison broke my table!” Grace wailed.

“Please! You think that that’s bad? Try my problem on for size: I got Beverly Barlowe applying for my assistant and denying that she’s herself at the same time!” Jo yelled at her.

There was a pause as everybody else looked at the woman in question. “What?” she shrugged nonchalantly. “I am Andria Korshe, and how can you disprove this?”

“No, you’re not! You’re Beverly Barlowe!”

“Am not.”

“Are too!”

“Am not.”

“Are too!”

“Am not.”

“Are too!”

There was a pause as Jo and not-Beverly looked at each other, Jo almost desperately, not-Beverly emotionlessly.
“Let me see if I have figured out the problem,” Henry turned to Jo, seeing that Grace had backed down a bit by now. “She looks like Beverly Barlowe but has paperwork that states specifically that she’s not Beverly Barlowe, is that right?”

“Yes!” Jo said passionately. “Exactly! How can I prove that she’s Beverly Barlowe... to her, primarily?”

“Well, we need to go to the medical wing and ran the DNA check – Beverly Barlowe as a former inhabitant of Eureka has put her DNA into the DNA bank and-“ Henry began but Grace interrupted him.

“But we can’t! Those crystal robots that you gave me for a gift had activated when Allison accidentally broke the table and are now running amok there!”

Now Henry began to vaguely understand Jo’s frustration. “Right. Let’s get Jack and see if we can fix this mess-“

“Can I help?” Beverly/not-Beverly asked politely. “I do want to work – even here, so how can I help?”

“You shut up!” Jo jammed her finger almost up the other woman’s nose, when the latter took Jo’s hand and pulled it down. Jo jerked it back or at least tried to, but the other woman didn’t budge, and Henry, for once, was astonished to see how Jo, normally one of the strongest people in Eureka (not that it mattered) tried in vain to free her hand while the other woman just stood there not budging an inch.

“Oh dear, I’m guessing that this is the emergency you’ve been talking about regarding your friend?” spoke a strange voice, and several more people, two of whom were Douglass Fargo and Holly Marten appeared on the scene.

Henry felt his headache getting worse but then he saw Carter and it immediately vanished.

“Ah, Jack!” he said excitedly to his Carter-shaped friend. “What do you say that we go and van-quish some small robots?”
