Chapter One.

Abandoned Farmhouse, outside Oxnard, California

The demon grinned and drove his fist into the exposed ribs of the human suspended in front of him, feeling the ribs break. The human moaned in pain before the demon hit him again, this time in the face, dislocating his jaw and breaking several teeth. As the blood spurted from his mouth the demon was about to hit him again when a woman’s voice called out from the other side of the room.

“That’s enough!” The speaker stepped out of the shadows and walked over to the demon. Placing a hand on the demons shoulder the woman spoke again. “I don’t want him dead, not yet.”

Xander Harris, recent High School graduate, friend of a Slayer and a Witch, raised his head and tried to focus on the woman in front of him. This was definitely not what he imagined his Road Trip would be like. Finally his vision cleared enough to see.

He was in some building but not an old factory or warehouse and there was a very ugly looking demon standing in front of him with a lady in her forties by his side. He tried to speak but a dislocated jaw and a mouthful of blood garbled his words.

“Who am I and what is going on?” The woman asked. “Well my name is Melinda Finch, Alan Finch’s wife and you are here to pay for your crimes.”

Xander tried to speak but the only thing that came out of his mouth was some blood and a broken tooth.

Melinda frowned and turned to the demon next to him. “Charles, put his jaw back into place so that he can talk.”

The demon grinned and reached over and grasped Xander’s face. There was a muted crack and Xander gave out a muffled scream.

“Will there be anything else?” The demon asked.

“No that will be all.” Mrs Finch reached into her purse and produced a wad of cash which she passed to the demon who accepted it and left the building.

The wife of the late Alan Finch looked at the panting youth in front of her. Finally Xander raised his head and looked at the woman who had paid to have him kidnapped and beaten.

“Lady I hate to tell you this but I wasn’t the one who killed your husband.”

“No you weren’t. Alan was a weak and foolish man who paid for betraying Mayor Wilkens. The crime you committed was killing Richard.” She spat.

“Huhh?”

“I was there at the school that day, waiting for the moment when Richard would ascend and usher in a Golden Age. Only to have it ruined by you.”

“You’re crazy lady. I didn’t kill Wilkens, I’m just a normal guy.”

“Liar!” She shrieked, slapping him in the face. “I saw you, leading the students in the fight against the vampires. I know you were the one who planted the explosives in the library that destroyed Richard!”

Mrs Finch calmed herself. “I told the Mayor that you were the most dangerous one in the Slayer’s little group but he refused to believe me. Instead he concentrated on the Slayer and the Witch.”

“I’m not dangerous.” Xander said, wondering how many of his ribs were broken. “I’m the Zeppo, the donut fetcher.”

“So it wasn’t you who broke into the army base to steal a rocket launcher? Or maybe it was someone else who stopped a gang of zombies from blowing up the school?” Mrs Finch asked snidely.

“How did you know that?” Xander asked in shock.

“Richard kept detailed files on all of you.” Mrs Finch was about to say more but she started coughing, harsh hacking coughs that doubled her over. “Don’t worry.” She said, recovering from her coughing. “The rest of your friends will also pay for what they’ve done. The instrument of Richard’s vengeance just needs to wake up.”

“What are you going to do to them?”

“Me? Nothing. I’ll be dead soon but Richard’s vengeance will reach them from beyond the grave.” She began to carefully draw a chalk design on the floor around Xander. “When Richard accepted me into his service I bound my soul and my life to his. Thanks to you I’ll be dead within the month but I take comfort in the fact that you’ll be in Hell before me.”

Xander watched as Mrs Finch prepared the ritual. He knew that there was no chance of a rescue. Buffy and Willow were still in Sunnydale and even if they knew that he was in trouble there was no way that they could get here in time to save him. As he watched the disciple of Wilkens drew another symbol and an idea formed in his mind. A memory of the times in the library when either Willow or Giles would warn him not to disturb the mystical designs they were using to cast a spell.

“Fuck you Bitch!” He shouted. “I’m glad that Wilkens was blown into a flaming pile of shit! If you think that he would have made the world a better place you’re crazier than he was!” Taking a deep breath he spat a mouthful of blood, spit and broken teeth at the woman.

Most of it struck her in the face, causing her to flinch. But some landed on the chalk lines.

Angrily Mrs Finch wiped her face. “Disgusting child!” She snarled and drove a thin bladed knife into Xander’s side. “You think that if you get me angry enough I’ll kill you quickly.” She stalked out of the mystical circle, to angry to double check her work. Producing a leather bound book she quickly rifled through the pages.

“You will suffer pain unimaginable before I cast you into Hell.” She declared before starting to chant. The symbols at the Cardinal points began to glow, then beams of arcane energy shot forth, intersecting in Xander’s body.

“YEARGH!!” Xander screamed as the energy streams ran through him.

Mrs Finch smiled as she heard the screams of the boy who had destroyed her dreams. It was then that she saw it. It wasn’t much just a few drops of blood and a fragment of tooth. But they had landed right on the intersection of several lines. The power she was summoning hit the blood and there was an immediate mystical short circuit.

“NOOO!!” Was all she could shout as the magical backlash hit her, throwing her across the room and starting a fire. As she struggled to move she realised her back was broken. Looking around she saw that the entire house was on fire and that there was no escape for her.

But she still forced a smile as she watched as Alexander Harris seemed to fold in on himself and disappear.

“Richard, your vengeance has begun.” She thought before the flames claimed her.

Sunnydale

Willow Rosenberg sat bolt upright in the bed. For a moment she was confused, this wasn’t her room. And thanks to the cool night breeze that came through the open window she realised that she was naked. She was about to panic when she recognised the soft snores of the person in the bed with her.

Willow relaxed, she was in Oz’s room. Sighing she lay back and cuddled into Oz’s side, her boyfriend automatically wrapping his arms around her even in his sleep.

As she drifted off to sleep she wondered why she dreamt about Xander. Her best friend since kindergarten hadn't appeared in her dreams since 'The Fluke!’. Maybe she was just missing him, she hoped that he’d be back from his Road Trip soon.

Across town Buffy Summers, the Slayer, was doing a late night patrol. Even though it was the ‘summer lull’ she’d still managed to stake a couple of vampires, though they were young, probably leftovers from the fight on Graduation Day.

Deciding that it was enough for tonight she started to head towards home. There was a pint of ‘Ben & Jerry’s’ triple choc in the freezer and she was in the mood for some comfort food.

Suddenly she shivered and looked around. Why did she have the feeling that she was missing something? Shaking it off she continued on her way home, maybe there were some of her Mom’s Brownies left she could have with her ice cream.

Another World

Xander felt himself falling. He barely had time to panic when he landed on something hard. Groaning he opened his eyes to find the muzzle of a pistol pointed at his head. The pistol was being held by a man wearing an eye patch.

Just before he passed out again he heard a voice in the distance.

“Intruder Alert on the Command Level! Code Red! Intruder Alert on the Command Level! Code Red!”
