Story: A Mumbled Declaration

“Aime-moi moins, mais aime-moi longtemps.” *

There it was again. The same sleepily-mumbled sentence as the night before and the night before that and all the nights before that. That one sentence had the power to keep him awake for a long time after his lover had fallen asleep, trying to figure out what on earth it meant. Trying to figure out why his lover only said it right before he fell asleep.

A quick search had led him to multiple links to a French film called Les Chansons d’Amour, but not to a perfect translation. Yes, he knew that it had something to do with love (he remembered that much high school French), but he still hadn’t figured out what it meant exactly. And since he refused to go to Willow or Giles—it was something between his lover and himself, something that was too intimate to share with others—he had to deal with it himself.

At first days had passed since his lover had said that sentence for the first time and then weeks yet he was still no closer to finding the perfect answer. So one night Xander gathered enough (Dutch) courage to ask Tony what he mumbled each night before falling asleep.

“Love me less, but love me a long time.”

He smiled happily at the answer before giving Tony a lingering kiss.

End of “A Mumbled Declaration”.

A/N: Reviews are loved. Flames are mocked.

* The quote at the beginning of the story is a line from the French film Les Chansons d'Amour. Yes, this film actually exists in real life.
