Chapter 4: Making circles
A/N: Characters aren't mine.Chapter 4: Making circles
Sam watched Giles’ door shut as Dean left and avoided Willow’s questioning look to follow Buffy into the kitchen. He felt bad for her, clearly she didn’t understand why Dean was being so brusque with her and he leaned in the doorway to watch her.
Buffy was aware that Dean had taken off again, as well as the fact that Sam was observing her silently, but she pretended not to notice and picked up her bowl again to finish mashing the potatoes.
“Can I help?” Sam asked kindly and Buffy felt her careful control slip at his soft tone. She nodded and placed a few vegetables on a cutting board and he took her hint and started to chop them. They worked in silence for a few minutes before she couldn’t stand it anymore.
“What did I do wrong Sam?” Buffy asked, setting her bowl down again but not looking at him in effort to keep the tears in her eyes from falling. She heard Sam still and his arms went around her in a comforting hug.
“You know, don’t you?” She asked him, looking up and he hesitated, “Sam please…”
“Few months ago Dean and I finished a job and he dropped me off at a hotel, told me 20 times to lock the door,” Sam rolled his eyes and Buffy flashed a ghost of a smile. “He said he’d be back soon and took off. Next day he came back angrier than I’ve seen in a long time, he wouldn’t talk to me either, not for a few days.”
Sam sighed and rubbed the back of his neck, “Buffy he went to your prom.”
Buffy blinked slowly, trying to absorb that startling revelation. “He what?”
“Dean bought a suit and went to your prom, he wanted to give you a normal girl moment,” Sam answered and Buffy’s expression changed from confusion to gratitude then back to confusion.
“I’m still missing something here,” Buffy stated, trying to recall her prom and if she’d seen Dean in a suit. The image alone of that would be memorable enough, she was sure, but she didn’t.
“He saw you and Angel dancing.” Sam said and her face crumbled as she remembered hearing a door slam and watching a car peel out of the parking lot. No wonder he was so distant, she thought, and looked at Sam, hoping he didn’t think badly of her too.
“Angel was leaving town,” she told him quietly and Sam listened. “He was going to leave after graduation, he only came to my prom for that reason too.”
Sam said nothing, simply brushed away the tears Buffy hadn’t realized were trailing down her cheeks. She wrapped her arms around his waist to return his hug and he rested his chin on the top of her head.
“He hates me doesn’t he?” Buffy asked, her question muffled by his chest but the hope in her voice evident. Sam smiled slightly and smoothed her hair, placing a kiss on her forehead and she pulled away to look up at him.
“No, he’s just a little confused. Give him some time to cool off and then we’ll take care of the demon. After that, pull him aside and try to talk to him, I’m sure you guys can fix it.” Sam answered reassuringly and she nodded.
They resumed their dinner preparations talking about the latest Sunnydale happenings and his latest hunts. Soon enough Buffy found herself relaxing and laughing with Sam about the vampires Dean had set on fire, her mind working all the while on how to get Dean alone to talk.
Now that she understood why he was acting that way, she intended to smooth over their rough patch and get back to normal. She’d missed him far too much to let things go on the way they were, she decided and planned to make sure that this visit ended on a good note.
Now she just had to get him to stay in the same room long enough to talk to her, she thought and worried her lip, yeah that might be difficult.
